Introduction To Quantum Computation And Information

This book aims to provide a pedagogical introduction to the subjects of quantum information and quantum computation. Topics include non-locality of quantum mechanics, quantum computation, quantum cryptography, quantum error correction, fault-tolerant quantum computation as well as some experimental aspects of quantum computation and quantum cryptography. Only knowledge of basic quantum mechanics is assumed. Whenever more advanced concepts and techniques are used, they are introduced carefully. This book is meant to be a self-contained overview. While basic concepts are discussed in detail, unnecessary technical details are excluded. It is well-suited for a wide audience ranging from physics graduate students to advanced researchers. This book is based on a lecture series held at Hewlett-Packard Labs, Basic Research Institute in the Mathematical Sciences (BRIMS), Bristol from November 1996 to April 1997, and also includes other contributions.

Waves and Particles in Light and Matter

From September 24 through 30, 1992 the Workshop on "Waves and Parti cles in Light and Matter" was held in the Italian city of Trani in celebration of the centenary of Louis de Broglie's birth. As is well known, the relationship between quantum theory and ob jective reality was one of the main threads running through the researches of this French physicist. It was therefore in a fitting tribute to him on his 90th birthday that ten years ago an international conference on the same subject was convened in Perugia. On that occasion, physicists from all over the world interested in the problematics of wave-particle duality engaged in thoughtful debates (the proceedings of which were subsequently ...

Exotic States in Quantum Nanostructures

Mesoscopic physics has made great strides in the last few years. It is an area of research that is attractive to many graduate students of theoretical condensed matter physics. The techniques that are needed to understand it go beyond the conventional perturbative approaches that still form the bulk of the graduate lectures that are given to students. Even when the non-perturbative techniques are presented, they often are presented within an abstract context. It is important to have lectures given by experts in the field, which present both theory and experiment in an illuminating and inspiring way, so that the impact of new methodology on novel physics is clear. It is an apt time to have su...

Abstract: "This report has two purposes. Firstly, I give a reasonably introductory and up to date review of three aspects of quantum information processing. These are cryptography, computation and teleportation, in this context all usually prefixed with quantum. Cryptography utilizes states of individual quantum systems for the transfer of conventional classical bits of information and, in a sense, teleportation is its inverse, using classical bits to faithfully transfer a quantum state. Computation utilizes the evolving quantum state of a complex system, which consists of many interacting individuals. Secondly, the report contains an extensive list of references. I give some details of the current experimental achievements, proposals and prospects for the future and of the patents granted to date. The references should provide a decent springboard for readers who wish to dive into any aspects of the subject in more depth, or to indulge in background reading."

This book includes within its scope studies of the structural, electrical, optical and acoustical properties of bulk, low-dimensional and amorphous semiconductors; computational semiconductor physics; interface properties, including the physics and chemistry of heterojunctions, metal-semiconductor and insulator-semiconductor junctions; all multi-layered structures involving semiconductor components. Dopant incorporation. Growth and preparation of materials, including both epitaxial (e.g. molecular beam and chemical vapour methods) and bulk techniques; in situ monitoring of epitaxial growth processes, also included are appropriate aspects of surface science such as the influence of growth kin...
