Regulating Social Life
This book presents the original concept of the ‘dispositif of age’, combining post-Foucauldian analytics of the dispositif, discourse and governmentality with the historical semantics of Reinhart Koselleck to explore the functions of the notion of youth in the regulation of social life. Making use of examples from sources including scientific and media statements, youth policy programmes, and strategies at international (European) and local (Polish) levels, the author shows how this concept of youth supports processes of social regulation and contributes to the implementation of political goals as specific responses to issues such as radicalization and violence, unemployment, and economic crisis. Blicke auf Schönheit und Alter
Tina Denninger beschäftigt sich aus soziologischer Perspektive mit normativen Anforderungen an den alternden Körper. In diesem Zusammenhang spielen Fragen von Schönheit und Hässlichkeit, Unsichtbarkeit und Sichtbarkeit sowie Anerkennung und Missachtung eine große Rolle. Grundlage für die empirische Untersuchung sind qualitative Interviews mit Männern und Frauen zwischen 50 und 85 Jahren, die mithilfe des Blicks als analytischem Instrument ausgewertet werden. Am Ende steht in jedem Fall die Erkenntnis, dass Schönheit bis ins hohe Alter eine große Rolle spielt. Die Befragten orientieren sich weiterhin stark an hegemonialen Schönheitsidealen von Schlankheit und Jugendlichkeit, wobei sie auch Strategien der Umdeutung ihrer alternden Körper finden: Dennoch sind die Aussagen von einer starken Abwertung des alternden Körpers geprägt.

Schwul sein und älter werden
Die vorliegende Studie analysiert Selbstbildungsprozesse älterer schwuler Männer. Dabei stehen Verhandlungen und Aneignungen der Dimensionen Alter(n), Begehren und Geschlecht im Mittelpunkt, die „unter der Treppe“ im Kontext einer gleichzeitigen diskursiven Unsichtbarkeit „schwulen“ Alter(n)s stattfinden. Die Untersuchung verbindet einen identitäts- und kategorienkritischen Theorierahmen mit einem qualitativ-empirischen Fokus auf intersektionale Selbstkonzepte. Ausgangspunkt der Selbstbeschreibungen von schwulen Männern zwischen 60 und 90 Jahren sind ihre biographischen Erfahrungen, die häufig von starker Diskriminierung geprägt sind. Diese haben deutliche Auswirkungen auf gegenwärtige Versuche einer „gelingenden“ Selbstbeschreibung als nicht nur schwuler, sondern (nun) auch älterer Mann.
Studies of Discourse and Governmentality
This volume brings together analyses of governmentality from different angles in order to explore the multiple forms, practices, modes, programmes and rationalities of the ‘conduct of conduct’ today. Following the publication of Foucault’s annual lecture series at the Collège de France, scholars have attempted to critically rethink Foucault’s ideas. Vielmehr spielen auch die unübersehbaren, bspw. über Medizin und Lebensstile induzierten Veränderungen von alternder und vergänglicher Körperlichkeit eine zentrale Rolle. Im Fokus steht dabei gerade die Verbindung von Altern und vergänglicher Körperlichkeit bzw. deren ‚Vermeidung‘ oder ‚Verbannung‘.
