Dictionary of Computer Vision and Image Processing

Written by leading researchers, the 2nd Edition of the Dictionary of Computer Vision & Image Processing is a comprehensive and reliable resource which now provides explanations of over 3500 of the most commonly used terms across image processing, computer vision and related fields including machine vision. It offers clear and concise definitions with short examples or mathematical precision where necessary for clarity that ultimately makes it a very usable reference for new entrants to these fields at senior undergraduate and graduate level, through to early career researchers to help build up knowledge of key concepts. As the book is a useful source for recent terminology and concepts, expe...

Fundamentals of Digital Image Processing

This is an introductory to intermediate level text on the science of image processing, which employs the Matlab programming language to illustrate some of the elementary, key concepts in modern image processing and pattern recognition. The approach taken is essentially practical and the book offers a framework within which the concepts can be understood by a series of well chosen examples, exercises and computer experiments, drawing on specific examples from within science, medicine and engineering. Clearly divided into eleven distinct chapters, the book begins with a fast-start introduction to image processing to enhance the accessibility of later topics. Subsequent chapters offer increasin...

Image Analysis and Recognition

ICIAR 2004, the International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition, was the ?rst ICIAR conference, and was held in Porto, Portugal. ICIAR will be organized annually, and will alternate between Europe and North America. ICIAR 2005 will take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The idea of o?ering these conferences came as a result of discussion between researchers in Portugal and Canada to encourage collaboration and exchange, mainly between these two countries, but also with the open participation of other countries, addressing recent advances in theory, methodology and applications. The response to the call for papers for ICIAR 2004 was very positive. From 316 full papers submitted, 2...

We investigate the application of computer vision techniques to rigid object recognition in Computed Tomography (CT) security scans of baggage items. This imagery is of poor resolution and is complex in nature: items of interest can be imaged in any orientation and copious amounts of clutter, noise and artefacts are prevalent. We begin with a novel 3D extension to the seminal SIFT keypoint descriptor that is evaluated through specific instance recognition in the volumetric data. We subsequently compare the performance of the SIFT descriptor against a selection of alternative descriptor methodologies. We demonstrate that the 3D SIFT descriptor is notably outperformed by simpler descriptors wh...

RGB-D Image Analysis and Processing

This book focuses on the fundamentals and recent advances in RGB-D imaging as well as covering a range of RGB-D applications. The topics covered include: data acquisition, data quality assessment, filling holes, 3D reconstruction, SLAM, multiple depth camera systems, segmentation, object detection, salience detection, pose estimation, geometric modelling, fall detection, autonomous driving, motor rehabilitation therapy, people counting and cognitive service robots. The availability of cheap RGB-D sensors has led to an explosion over the last five years in the capture and application of colour plus depth data. The addition of depth data to regular RGB images vastly increases the range of appl...

Domain Adaptation in Computer Vision with Deep Learning

This book provides a survey of deep learning approaches to domain adaptation in computer vision. It gives the reader an overview of the state-of-the-art research in deep learning based domain adaptation. This book also discusses the various approaches to deep learning based domain adaptation in recent years. It outlines the importance of domain adaptation for the advancement of computer vision, consolidates the research in the area and provides the reader with promising directions for future research in domain adaptation. Divided into four parts, the first part of this book begins with an introduction to domain adaptation, which outlines the problem statement, the role of domain adaptation a...
