Brothers and Strangers

Unprecedented in scope and detail, Brothers and Strangers is a vivid history of how the mythic Africa of the black American imagination ran into the realities of Africa the place. In the 1920s, Marcus Garvey—convinced that freedom from oppression was not possible for blacks in the Americas—led the last great African American emigrationist movement. His U.S.-based Universal Negro Improvement Association worked with the Liberian government to create a homeland for African Americans. Ibrahim Sundiata explores the paradox at the core of this project: Liberia, the chosen destination, was itself racked by class and ethnic divisions and—like other nations in colonial Africa—marred by labor ...

Few infantry regiments in the Civil War compiled a more distinguished record than the Fifth Missouri. The unique blending of fiery Irish Confederates from St. Louis with rural pro-Southern Missourians forged an unshakable esprit de corps, making the unit the crack infantry regiment in the western sector. Most of Colonel James C. McCown's troops were young men in their 20s, and their good health and physical conditioning allowed them to carry out their "shock" missions throughout the region. From the perspective of the common soldiers and the unit's leaders the activities and battles of the Fifth Missouri are recounted here.

Automated Written Corrective Feedback in Research Paper Revision

This book studies the use of an automated writing evaluation (AWE) systems in research paper revision for publication purposes by Chinese doctoral students. Research writing skills are essential for achieving academic status, and AWE tools can be a great companion on the journey. However, AWE tools may provide a disservice if users do not stay alert to inaccurate feedback, inaccurate correction suggestions, and missed errors. The effects of accurate feedback on revision outcomes have been the focus of a number of AWE studies, but student engagement and revision results in cases of inaccurate feedback and missed errors have rarely been investigated. Such investigations can provide practical a...

Disorientation and Moral Life

Disorientations are human experiences of losing one's bearings, such that it is not clear how to go on. Philosophical ethics has emphasized how disorientations can paralyze, overwhelm, and harm moral agents. Disorientation and Moral Life defends a feminist philosophical account of how, in some cases, disorientations instead improve moral and political action.

U. S. Marshal, Yancy Lawhorn opened the door to Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett's office looking for his Apache friend, Paco. Garrett had telegraphed the marshal soon after he arrested the Indian for murdering four white men: tracked them down and methodically killed each one of them, but why, Lawhorn wondered. Pat could only shake his head. Paco would talk to no one, including his friend Marshal Lawhorn. Coming to believe there is more to this tragedy than has thus far come to light, Lawhorn feels that Bright Dove, Paco's beautiful sister knows more than she is telling. Could the Indians being cheated out of their rightful rations at the Indian Agency somehow be associated with the killings? Or could the issue of inferior goods have contributed in some way? The marshal intends to find out, but locating witness and convincing them to testify proves to be a tall order. As the various threads of fact come together, Yancy's life is threatened, but with his determination set to seek the truth surrounding the murders, Yancy places his loyalty to Paco above his own self-protection.
