Københavns Befæstning
Bogen er en guide, der har til formål at få læseren op sofaen og ud i naturen for at opleve et stort og spændende forsvarsværk. Det er Københavns Befæstning, som blev etableret i perioden 1884-1918. Det var og er Danmarkshistoriens hidtil største offentlige investering. Befæstningen omfatter en 15 km lang våd voldgrav, kaldet Vestvolden og derudover en masse svært bevæbnede forter og batterier både til lands og til vands, alt sammen stort set indenfor en afstand på 10 km fra Københavns centrum. Det modige skib Lotus
Søndag den 18. december 1966 strandede hvalfangerskibet ”Southern Lotus” ved Dybå i Fjaltring. Det var et skib med historie. I 1942 blev det i al hast bygget som korvetten ”HMS Lotus”, hvorefter det under resten af krigen eskorterede sårbare konvojer og holdt tyske ubåde på afstand. I juli 1942 deltog ”Lotus” i den ulyksalige konvoj PQ 17 til Rusland. 24 skibe blev sænket, da eskorten blev trukket væk, og kun den lille ”Lotus” fra Fjaltring vendte om for at komme de nødstedte søfolk til undsætning. Den reddede 109 mand fra den visse død.

Fra februar 1945 til Danmarks befrielse kom der omkring 250.000 tyske flygtninge til landet. De fleste kom med skib fra de østlige dele af Tyskland. Det var kvinder, børn og ældre mænd – mange var i en frygtelig forfatning, og dødstallet var højt. Danskerne ønskede ikke at hjælpe de slagne fjender. Den tyske besættelsesmagt måtte tage sig af dem. Samme dag Danmark blev frit, ændrede situationen sig drastisk. Nu var de danske myndigheder tvunget til at tage sig af flygtningene, som var nødtørftigt indkvarteret i skoler, sportshaller, kollegier, forsamlingshuse og hoteller over hele landet.
