Geometric Modelling, Numerical Simulation, and Optimization:

This edited volume addresses the importance of mathematics for industry and society by presenting highlights from contract research at the Department of Applied Mathematics at SINTEF, the largest independent research organization in Scandinavia. Examples range from computer-aided geometric design, via general purpose computing on graphics cards, to reservoir simulation for enhanced oil recovery. Contributions are written in a tutorial style.

Geometric Modeling and Algebraic Geometry

Geometric Modeling and Algebraic Geometry, though closely related, are traditionally represented by two almost disjoint scientific communities. Both fields deal with objects defined by algebraic equations, but the objects are studied in different ways. In 12 chapters written by leading experts, this book presents recent results which rely on the interaction of both fields. Some of these results have been obtained from a major European project in geometric modeling.

Topics in Algebraic Geometry and Geometric Modeling

Algebraic geometry and geometric modeling both deal with curves and surfaces generated by polynomial equations. Algebraic geometry investigates the theoretical properties of polynomial curves and surfaces; geometric modeling uses polynomial, piecewise polynomial, and rational curves and surfaces to build computer models of mechanical components and assemblies for industrial design and manufacture. The NSF sponsored the four-day ''Vilnius Workshop on Algebraic Geometry and Geometric Modeling'', which brought together some of the top experts in the two research communities to examine a wide range of topics of interest to both fields. This volume is an outgrowth of that workshop. Included are surveys, tutorials, and research papers. In addition, the editors have included a translation of Minding's 1841 paper, ''On the determination of the degree of an equations obtained by elimination'', which foreshadows the modern application of mixed volumes in algebraic geometry. The volume is suitable for mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers interested in applications of algebraic geometry to geometric modeling.

Algebraic Geometry and Geometric Modeling

This book spans the distance between algebraic descriptions of geometric objects and the rendering of digital geometric shapes based on algebraic models. These contrasting points of view inspire a thorough analysis of the key challenges and how they are met. The articles focus on important classes of problems: implicitization, classification, and intersection. Combining illustrative graphics, computations and review articles this book helps the reader gain a firm practical grasp of these subjects.

Mathematical Methods for Curves and Surfaces

This volume constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Mathematical Methods for Curves and Surfaces, MMCS 2008, held in Tønsberg, Norway, in June/July 2008. The 28 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 129 talks presented at the conference. The topics addressed by the papers range from mathematical analysis of various methods to practical implementation on modern graphics processing units.

IsoGeometric Analysis: A New Paradigm in the Numerical Approximation of PDEs

  • Publisher: Springer

Providing an introduction to isogeometric methods with a focus on their mathematical foundations, this book is composed of four chapters, each devoted to a topic of special interests for isogeometric methods and their theoretical understanding. It contains a tutorial on splines and generalizations that are used in CAD parametrizations, and gives an overview of geometric modeling techniques that can be used within the isogeometric approach, with a focus on non-tensor product splines. Finally, it presents the mathematical properties of isogeometric spaces and spline spaces for vector field approximations, and treats in detail an application of fundamental importance: the isogeometric simulation of a viscous incompressible flow. The contributions were written by Carla Manni and Hendrik Speelers, Vibeke Skytt and Tor Dokken, Lourenco Beirao da Veiga, Annalisa Buffa, Giancarlo Sangalli and Rafael Vazquez, and finally by John Evans and Thomas J.R. Hughes.

Theory and Practice of Geometric Modeling

This book is a result of the lectures and discussions during the conference "Theory and Practice of Geometric Modeling". The event has been organized by the Wilhelm-Schickard-Institut fiir Informatik, Universitat Tiibingen and took place at the Heinrich-Fabri-Institut in Blaubeuren from October 3 to 7, 1988. The conference brought together leading experts from academic and industrial research institutions, CAD system developers and experien ced users to exchange their ideas and to discuss new concepts and future directions in geometric modeling. The main intention has been to bridge the gap between theoretical results, performance of existing CAD systems and the real problems of users. The c...
