Men efter en gåtur til det berømte marmorbassin må han i stedet ringe til politiet og fortælle, at han har fundet en død kvinde i det kolde vand. Det viser sig at være den amerikanske ambassadørs datter, Tricia Andersen, og den efterfølgende opklaring får enorm opmærksomhed, endda fra Det Hvide Hus. Sagen får højeste prioritet og overdrages til Sandra Haraldsson og Dennis Wilhelmson fra politiet i Göteborg. En række omstændigheder gør, at Karl Ström hurtigt bliver politiets hovedmistænkte. Hans kæreste, Lisa, begynder derfor sin egen private efterforskning i et forsøg på at rense Karl, selvom det ser mere og mere sort ud. Den efterforskning leder hende ud til det gamle fyrtårn på Hållö, som i over hundrede år har beskyttet de søfarende og har været bemandet af fyrmestrene og deres familier. Er der mon en kobling mellem en af de gamle fyrmestre og den afdøde Tricia Andersen? "Fyrmesteren" er fjerde del i krimiserien ”Mordene på Smögen”.
