When first beginning research to find her family's history, Diana sought out the descendants of the Simon family in the St. Louis area to learn that the place they came from had something to do with 'swans.' She later learned that they came from Swanden, in the Canton of Glarus in Switzerland. Then through her great-grandfathers obituary in Davenport, Iowa, she was able to place the Millers/Moellers in Schoenberg, Schleswig-Holstein. The Hansens and the Carstensens were just as influential as the Carstensens were the "Kings Royal Forest Rangers." Enjoy the journey as you learn how they came to Davenport, Iowa from Schoenberg on the edge of the Baltic Sea in Germany (where they were fishermen) and the Alps of Switzerland (where they were of Jewish faith) to the small village of Cordova, on the banks of the muddy Mississippi after the Civil War. More than 40 generations, the families reach back to 860 A.D. and include medieval rulers of Europe.

Museums in the German Art World

Combining the history of ideas, institutions, and architecture, this study shows how the museum both reflected and shaped the place of art in German culture from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. On a broader level, it illuminates the origin and character of the museum's central role in modern culture. James Sheehan begins by describing the establishment of the first public galleries during the last decades of Germany's old regime. He then examines the revolutionary upheaval that swept Germany between 1789 and 1815, arguing that the first great German museums reflected the nation's revolutionary aspirations. By the mid-nineteenth century, the climate had changed; mu...

Travel Narratives in Dialogue examines nineteenth-century imperialist travelogues written about Peru and examines Peruvian writers of the same period who fashioned their own travelogues as protests against how imperialist writers denigrated Peru and Peruvian culture. This study exposes the dialogic nature of travelogues in the Bakhtinean sense and underscores how the travel-writing subjects produce texts that serve as fora of struggle, coercion, control, and contestation depending on the personal, imperialist, nationalist, and proto-feminist agendas the writers supported. Travel narratives examined include those written by J. J. von Tschudi, Madeline Vinton Dahlgren, Flora Tristan, Juan Bustamante, Manuel A. Fuentes, and José Manuel Valdéz y Palacios.

Tertiary Frogs from Central Europe

Remains of fossil frogs, elsewhere scarce, have been found abundantly for more than one hundred and twenty five years in the Tertiary deposits in northern and western Bohemia. In most cases they are imprints of complete skeletons or their parts poorly preserved in carbonaceous claystones, and difficult to interpret. A new locality of Tertiary diatomites that has been discovered in 1950 in northern Bohemia, not far from the town of DMin, is Bechlejovice. This locality yielded very interesting material: in addition to innumerable leaf imprints, frequent frog-remains were so excellently pre served that they made possible studies not only of skeletal parts but also outlines of muscles, organs, b...
