Design today is a global instrument. Bernhard Bürdek traces the progress of design from its beginnings in the late 19th century, through the most significant movements of the 20th century up to those recent developments in biological engineering which will shape the 21st century. Design is now a discipline in its own right and its expertise can be incorporated within interdisciplinary processes. The most important fundamental principles of design theory and methodology are presented, looking in particular at the communicative function of products and highlighting aspects such as corporate and service design, design management, strategic design, interface/interaction design and human design.
A history of design that is often overlooked—until we need it Have you ever hit the big blue button to activate automatic doors? Have you ever used an ergonomic kitchen tool? Have you ever used curb cuts to roll a stroller across an intersection? If you have, then you’ve benefited from accessible design—design for people with physical, sensory, and cognitive disabilities. These ubiquitous touchstones of modern life were once anything but. Disability advocates fought tirelessly to ensure that the needs of people with disabilities became a standard part of public design thinking. That fight took many forms worldwide, but in the United States it became a civil rights issue; activists used...
'Showing and Telling' is the first academic work to explore how publicly funded film heritage institutes account for their mandate in their public activities. It does that by inspecting and evaluating public presentations and visitor information about these presentations. The research was done by juxtaposing two complementary approaches. The first is grounded in the author’s experience as a collection researcher and curator and makes a case for the richness of archival objects usually ignored for their lack of aesthetic qualities. The second is a survey of the public activities of 24 institutes worldwide, based on their websites, in February 2014; the latter constitutes a unique source. Th...

This publication is motivated by the conviction that the concept of the object, as such, has been left behind. The universe of objects, or perhaps we would have to say of 'offjects', put forward here is that of the work of those generation that graduated after the Barcelona Olympics: from 1992 into these first few years of the 21st century. What seems clear is that the classic definition of 'design' has been rendered obsolete. In the first place because an object's conceptual and narrative charge largely determines its material and physical configuration, and in second place, because many present-day pieces are not produced industrially - some because their designers chose not to, others because they seem not to fit into excessively conservative industrial set-ups. What does seem to be the case is that we are dealing with a new typology of designer, more open, more multidisciplinary and more remote from the traditional commercial circuit, which is not to say remote from the market.
