Concurrency, Compositionality, and Correctness

This Festschrift volume, published in honor of Willem-Paul de Roever, contains 19 detailed papers written by the friends and colleagues of the honoree, all eminent scientists in their own right. These are preceded by a detailed bibliography and rounded off, at the end of the book, with a gallery of photographs. The theme under which the papers have been collected is Concurrency, Compositionality, and Correctness, reflecting the focus of Willem-Paul de Roever's research career. Topics addressed include model checking, computer science and state machines, ontology and mereology of domains, game theory, compiler correctness, fair scheduling and encryption algorithms.

The concept of CAST as Computer Aided Systems Theory, was introduced by F. Pichler in the late 1980s to include those computer theoretical and practical developments as tools to solve problems in System Science. It was considered as the third component (the other two being CAD and CAM) necessary to build the path from Computer and Systems Sciences to practical developments in Science and Engineering. The University of Linz organized the first CAST workshop in April 1988, which demonstrated the acceptance of the concepts by the scientific and technical community. Next, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria joined the University of Linz to organize the first international meeting on CAS...

Testing is the primary hardware and software verification technique used by industry today. Usually, it is ad hoc, error prone, and very expensive. In recent years, however, many attempts have been made to develop more sophisticated formal testing methods. This coherent book provides an in-depth assessment of this emerging field, focusing on formal testing of reactive systems. This book is based on a seminar held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in January 2004. It presents 19 carefully reviewed and revised lectures given at the seminar in a well-balanced way ensuring competent complementary coverage of all relevant aspects. An appendix provides a glossary for model-based testing and basics on finite state machines and on labelled transition systems. The lectures are presented in topical sections on testing of finite state machines, testing of labelled transition systems, model-based test case generation, tools and case studies, standardized test notation and execution architectures, and beyond testing.

FME '96: Industrial Benefit and Advances in Formal Methods

This book presents the refereed proceedings of the Third International Symposium of Formal Methods Europe, FME '96, held in Oxford, UK, in March 1996. FME '96 was co-sponsored by IFIP WG 14.3 and devoted to "the application and demonstrated industrial benefit of formal methods, their new horizons and strengthened foundations". The 35 full revised papers included were selected from a total of 103 submissions; also included are three invited papers. The book addresses all relevant aspects of formal methods, from the point of view of the industrial R & D professional as well as from the academic viewpoint, and impressively documents the significant progress in the use of formal methods for the solution of real-world problems.
