The World Investment Report 2013 (WIR13) presents the latest data and analysis of trends in foreign direct investment (FDI) and related policies. The Report analyzes the sharp decline in global FDI flows in 2012, which was particularly marked among developed countries. As a consequence, developing economies received more FDI than developed countries for the first time ever. Moreover, developing countries were the source of almost one third of global FDI flows. Over the period 20132014, FDI flows are projected to rise moderately. However, a number of potentially destabilizing factors may add to the uncertain outlook for the global economy and thus constrain the pace of FDI recovery.

Global Governance and Policy Space for Development
The shape of the world economy has changed significantly over the last two decades, with a rising importance of several developing countries and regions as additional drivers of global economic growth. Fair and Equitable Treatment
"In recent years, the concept of fair and equitable treatment has assumed prominence in investment relations between States. While the earliest proposals that made reference to this standard of treatment for investment are contained in various multilateral efforts in the period immediately following World War II, the bulk of the State practice incorporating the standard is to be found in bilateral investment treaties which have become a central feature in international investment relations. In essence, the fair and equitable standard provides a yardstick by which relations between foreign direct investors and Governments of capital-importing countries may be assessed. It also acts as a signal from capital-importing countries, for it indicates, at the very least, a State's willingness to accommodate foreign capital on terms that take into account the interests of the investor in fairness and equity."--Provided by publisher.
