Promoting Health, Preventing Disease
Abstract: Specific and quantifiable objectives are established and delineated for each of 15 priority areas identified in the 1979 Surgeon General's report for the use of private and public sector organizations. The objectives were developed from an effort involving more than 500 individuals and organizations from both the private and governmental sectors, and from initial drafts by 167 invited experts at the 1979 Atlanta conference. Among the 15 topics covered are: pregnancy and infant health; immunization; toxic agent control; nutrition; and control of stress and violent behavior. Policy makers will be able to use the established objectives to track the Nation's successes or failures in disease prevention in the years to come. (wz).
Toward a Healthy Community : Organizing Events for Community Health Promotion
Abstract: Guidelines for developing health promotion activities in the community are presented through discussion of a healthy community system model. Health promotion events such as marathons, health fairs, and media campaigns can provide the stimulus, basic information, and general direction that individuals need to make appropriate changes in health habits. Appendices include questionnaires to assess health practices and community services currently available for those interested in collecting health-related data. (ds).

Strategies for Promoting Health for Specific Populations
The Office of Health Information, Health Promotion and Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine sponsored a series of 1-day consultation meetings for specific populations in 1980 to provide an opportunity for American populations to advise the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion on ways to ensure that the emerging national objectives for disease prevention and health promotion and the plans for implementing them respond to the health needs of these populations as well as to the general public.
