Before Brasília

Before Brasília offers an in-depth exploration of life in the captaincy of Goiás during the late colonial and early national period of Brazilian history. Karasch effectively counters the “decadence” narrative that has dominated the historiography of Goiás. She shifts the focus from the declining white elite to an expanding free population of color, basing her conclusions on sources previously unavailable to scholars that allow her to meaningfully analyze the impacts of geography and ethnography. Karasch studies the progression of this society as it evolved from the slaving frontier of the seventeenth century to a majority free population of color by 1835. As populations of indigenous and African captives and their descendants grew throughout Brazil, so did resistance and violent opposition to slavery. This comprehensive work explores the development of frontier violence and the enslavements that ultimately led to the consolidation of white rule over a majority population of color, both free and enslaved.

And because the founding of UNM coincided with the arrival of the railroad in New Mexico, the growth of the university coincides with Albuquerque's transition from small town to city as well as with the territory's attainment of statehood and the changes it has experienced in the course of the twentieth century.

Written by former UNM president William Bud Davis, Miracle on the Mesa covers the changes and growth experienced by the University since its founding on February 28, 1889. The story of the Miracle on the Mesa is told chronologically, within the framework of each administration, beginning with the joint presidencies of Elias S. Stover and Hiram Hadley, who served from 1892 through 1897, and ending with Louis Caldera, current president of UNM. More than just a history of the university, Davis's lively text also provides a unique look at Albuquerque and its citizens during each time period. For example, this colorful description of the equipment football players wore in the 1890s: Our canvas su...

Requiem for America's Best Idea

Requiem for America's Best Idea

In his enthusiastic explorations and fervent writing, Michael J. Yochim "was to Yellowstone what Muir was to Yosemite. . . . Other times, his writing is like that of Edward Abbey, full of passion for the natural world and anger at those who are abusing it," writes foreword contributor William R. Lowry. In 2013 Yochim was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). While fighting the disease, he wrote Requiem for America's Best Idea. The book establishes a unique parallel between Yochim's personal struggle with a terminal illness and the impact climate change is having on the national parks--the treasured wilderness that he loved and to which he dedicated his life. Yochim explains how climate change is already impacting the vegetation, wildlife, and the natural conditions in Olympic, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Yellowstone, and Yosemite National Parks. A poignant and thought-provoking work, Requiem for America's Best Idea investigates the interactions between people and nature and the world that can inspire and destroy them.

The Zanjeras of Ilocos

The Zanjeras of Ilocos

Zanjeras are resource management institutions that have endured for centuries in the Ilocos region of northern Luzon. By most accounts, these cooperative irrigation societies emerged during the Spanish regime when Augustinians were deployed to congregate indigenous populations into pueblos, convert them to Christianity, and raise tributes for the Crown. The book explores these challenges and proposes actions that governmental bodies can undertake to strengthen the adaptive capacity of zanjeras and other irrigation communities around the world.
