Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and twelve nations in the South Pacific Ocean.It is the third volume in a series conceived by Dr Bruce Vogeli of Columbia University Teachers College and published by WSP, aimed at producing contemporary accounts of mathematics teaching in a world-wide group of nations. Previous volumes have covered Central and South American nations and a selection of Muslim nations respectively.
This book presents an institutional study located at the intersection mathematics education and vocational education. There has been revived interest in recent years in the study of special functions. Many of the latest advances in the field were inspired by the works of R. A. Askey and colleagues on basic hypergeometric series and I. G. Macdonald on orthogonal polynomials related to root systems. Significant progress was made by the use of algebraic techniques involving quantum groups, Hecke algebras, and combinatorial methods. The CRM organized a workshop for key researchers in the field to present an overview of current trends. This volume consists of the contributions to that workshop. Topics include basic hypergeometric functions, algebraic and representation-theoretic methods, combinatorics of symmetric functions, root systems, and the connections with integrable systems.
An important contribution that ‘Emerging curriculum’ makes is a reconceptualizing of the curriculum development process. This moves development thinking from the traditional research-development-dissemination model to one that acknowledges: the interrelatedness of many influences on curriculum, the multi-layered nature of curriculum, and the complexity of the educational system in which curriculum exists.
