The Kitan Language and Script
The Kitans established the Liao dynasty in northern China, which lasted for over two centuries (916-1125). In this survey the reader will find what is currently known about the Kitan language and scripts. The language was very likely distantly related to Mongolian, with two quite different scripts in use. A few generations after their state was defeated, almost all trace of the Kitan spoken and written languages disappeared, except a few words in Chinese texts. Over the past few decades, however, inscriptions from the tombs of the Liao emperors and the Kitan aristocracy have been at least partially deciphered, resulting in a significant increase of our knowledge of the Kitan lexicon, morphology and syntax.

Actual Energy Consumption in Dwellings
Residential buildings have continuously improved in energy efficiency, partly as a consequence of the introduction of energy regulations in many countries. Although better thermal properties and systems efficiency have lowered energy consumption for space heating in recent decades, substantial differences in energy consumption in similar dwellings are still being observed. These differences in consumption are thought to be caused by differences in occupancy patterns, by quality of construction and by rebound effects.This research addresses the effect of energy performance regulations and occupant behaviour on energy consumption for space and water heating in dwellings built after the introduction of the energy performance regulations in the Netherlands. The results of this research show that improving the energy efficiency of buildings alone is not enough to decrease that energy consumption.

In The Class Reunion—An Annotated Translation and Commentary on the Sumerian Dialogue Two Scribes, J. Cale Johnson and Markham J. Geller present a critical edition, translation and commentary on the Sumerian scholastic dialogue otherwise known as Two Scribes, Streit zweier Schulabsolventen or Dialogue 1. The two protagonists, the Professor and the Bureaucrat, each ridicule their opponent in alternating speeches, while at the same time scoring points based on their detailed knowledge of Sumerian lexical and literary traditions. But they also represent the two social roles into which nearly all graduates of the Old Babylonian Tablet House typically gained entrance. So the dialogue also reflects on larger themes such as professional identity and the nature of scholastic activity in Mesopotamia in the Old Babylonian period (ca. 1800–1600 BCE).

De Zuiderzee als transportlandschap
Binnenvaart over de Zuiderzee is zeer belangrijk geweest voor de spectaculaire groei van de vroegmoderne Nederlandse economie (1550-1700). Dat concludeert promovendus Wouter Waldus. Hij heeft voor zijn promotie de vloot van de turfschipperij op de Zuiderzee goed onderbouwd berekend en vergeleken met andere sectoren. Daarnaast heeft hij de Zuiderzee als maritiem transportlandschap volledig in kaart gebracht: vaarroutes, markeringen, redes, etc.. Zo kon hij het unieke karakter van het binnenvaartnetwerk duidelijk maken. Waldus vond tijdens zijn onderzoek ook aanwijzingen voor gezinsbewoning aan boord van binnenschepen rond 1650, veel vroeger dan tot nu toe werd aangenomen.
