Game Changers in Labour Law

  • Categories: Law

The renowned international labour law scholars contributing to this incomparable volume use the term 'game changers' to refer to evolutions, concepts, ideas and challenges that are having, or have had, major impacts on how we must understand and approach labour law in today's global economy. The volume derives from an international conference organized by the Institute for Labour Law at the University of Leuven, Belgium in November 2017. This initiative is pursued in the spirit and with the methods of the late Emeritus Professor Roger Blanpain (1932-2016), a great reformer who continuously searched for key challenges in the world of work and looked as far as possible into the future, engagin...

What effect do robots, algorithms, and online platforms have on the world of work? Using case studies and examples from across the EU, the UK, and the US, this book provides a compass to navigate this technological transformation as well as the regulatory options available, and proposes a new map for the era of radical digital advancements. From platform work to the gig-economy and the impact of artificial intelligence, algorithmic management, and digital surveillance on workplaces, technology has overwhelming consequences for everyone's lives, reshaping the labour market and straining social institutions. Contrary to preliminary analyses forecasting the threat of human work obsolescence, th...

A Research Agenda for the Gig Economy and Society

Providing a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of the gig economy from both a labour and employment perspective, this Research Agenda goes beyond the question of the employment status of platform workers. It investigates how the gig economy is changing the way people work, how the platforms’ business models are spreading in our economies, and what labour and social institutions are needed to respond to the challenges that platform work raises.

The voice in the desert, beyond a skillfully written novel, is also a series of notes masterfully expressed by the amazing pen of Valerio di Stefano. Valerio, already author of several books, all of literary and philanthropic inspiration, is also a philologist, skill perfectly shown in this work. A work that is capable of completely immersing us in the illusory and, at times, oniric universe of Don Fiorentino. This Don is a parish priest of an unknown village who has a great passion: the classics of Italian and foreign literature. The incredible strength of this novel is the alternation of letters that the protagonist forwards to his favorite authors, almost as if he wanted to teach them how to write and to express themselves, by praising some techniques and harshly criticizing others. Valerio's writing is driving, it leads you page after page to discover biblical notes and quotes, always with the clear awareness of broadening your own cultural baggage which, compared to his, appears meager and eternally empty.

Collective Labour Rights for Self-Employed Workers

  • Categories: Law

Platform work arrangements are often defended as an expression of technological progress with the potential to enable people to work as self-employed individuals, often without any supervision or control. However, by now, it is well-documented that platform work not only shares important features of flexibility and precariousness with other casual work arrangements that are on the rise around the world, but it also entails the risk of excluding a significant portion of workers from the protection of fundamental collective labour rights, including their coverage from collective agreements. In this important and timely book, the author shows how a human rights-based approach (HRBA) towards col...

Exemplary Reading

This monograph sheds new light on the Renaissance reception of Valerius Maximus, whose collection of Memorable Deeds and Sayings - nowadays little studied - was once considered "the most important book next to the Bible." Offering a close study of all the Latin commentaries on Valerius Maximus printed between 1470 and 1600, the present volume explores how his exempla were read in different times and places and in different intellectual milieus, while also enhancing our general understanding of humanist commentary - which is now, more than ever, a thriving subject of research. (Series: Scientia universalis. Division I: Studies on the History of Pre-Modern Science, Vol. 2 / Abteilung I: Studien zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte der Vormoderne) [Subject: History, Literary Criticism, Renaissance Studies]Ã?Â?
