Victory Hall Yearbook
We have had a busy and productive year at Victory Hall Inc. This yearbook looks at the exhibitions and programs we have produced throughout 2015 and marks the opening of our third annual Big Small Show at DRAWING ROOMS, a review of current painting, drawing and three dimensional works from artists in the NY/NJ metropolitan area.
The Big Small Show 2014
The Big Small Show 2014 represents a sampling of recent, innovative works by ninety artists in the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area, and it is clearly expressive of the exciting level of energy and interaction that is happening among the artists included here, an indicator of the activity of our larger arts community as well. For all of us who have been developing Victory Hall DRAWING ROOMS as an art center since 2012 it also is a celebration, the harvest of our continual efforts to make a place for creative visual artists in Jersey City, believing that when the Arts flourish, the city will also flourish. Curator Anne Trauben has done an amazing job of tirelessly seeking out and gathering paintings, sculpture, drawings, artist-made books, and most importantly people who make art and people who support art from across both rivers and north to Connecticut.
2016 Victory Hall Yearbook
2016 has been a busy and productive year for us at Victory Hall Inc. and our activities are still going strong into the new year. Our Drawing Rooms exhibitions and outreach programs have brought together so many people from our ever-widening community; artists, curators, teachers, students, business-people, friends, supporters, and many neighborhood visitors. This yearbook looks at the exhibitions and programs we have produced throughout 2016 and marks the opening of our fourth annual Big Small Show, a review of current painting, drawing and three dimensional works from artists in the NY/NJ metropolitan area.

James Michael Pustorino: Cosmic Strips
The Cosmic Strips are a cosmology in 20 parts--a personal perception of the universe in a multi-layered, visual narrative that makes use of abstract painting, graphic forms, drawing from life and photographs, and real and imaginary landscapes. Influenced by orchestral fantasias, comics, science texts and named in honor of Cosmic Comics, a set of short stories by the Italian novelist, Italo Calvino, in which he imaginatively personified astronomical occurrences--each panoramic panel presents a story full of symbols and abstract language.
Mostly Drawing
Drawing, like writing, is an essentialy human form of expression, investigation and communication. Our intention when starting Drawing Rooms as an arts center in 2012, was to promote, encourage and display developments in drawing and drawing-related works by artists in our area. In creating this journal, we want to extend our reach beyond the walls of our building and present an ever-progressing selection of artists and images to a broader public. New Drawing New Jersey
Drawing Rooms is very excited to present our first statewide survey of drawing. An understanding of drawing as vital to one's development and innovation in the visual arts, is at the heart of all we do. In our three years of exhibition programming, we have featured drawing, often exploring its creative relationships to painting, and have found the principles and processes of drawing in three dimensional forms as well. As an art-space on the edge of the Jersey side of the Hudson, we have worked towards fulfilling our potential in making a place of community for New Jersey and New York artists to know each other and exhibit and work together. Rainbow Thursdays Artists Journal 2017-18
Rainbow Thursdays Artists is a community-based art education program connecting disabled adults with professional artists who provide them with materials, training and encouragement to express themselves through art. The program encompasses study of great artworks, the natural world, and images of people through books and photographs, and encourages each participant to understand drawing as their unique visual language with which they can create realistic and abstract form and systems, and express emotion and ideas through line and color. We hope you enjoy this sampling of the many artworks the group produced in the 2017/18 season. The subjects ranged widely: angels and saints, animals, Puerto Rican landscapes, the idea of abstract art itself, bugs and happy monsters, snowmen, hearts, flowers, dinosaurs, big ships, schmoos, clocks, playing cards, the Panama Canal, cathedrals, the Black Panther and of course, a variety of rainbows.
Ibou Ndoye: Taarou Adaa: New Drawing Series
TAAROU ADAA is a Wolof (Senegal) phrase that means "the beauty of art or culture". Wolof, the native language of of artist Ibou Ndoye, is credited with adding such colorful, casually insightful words to our culture as 'jive', 'dig', 'jamboree', and 'hip' or 'hep-cat'. The origin of this last, coming from the Wolof word 'hepikat', "one who has his eyes open" or "one who is aware"- captures best the spirit of these drawings. The artist sees more than we see in the everyday world we share and turns common sights into amazing, animate, icon-like forms; creating a lively sense of beauty in TAAROU ADAA.
