James Copeland (1773/4-1819) was of Irish descent. He lived in South Carolina as early as 1788/9 where he married Mary Frost in 1798/9. They migrated from Newberry District, South Carolina to Williamson County, Tennessee where they both died. Descendants have scattered throughout the United States.

William Copeland (1667-1720) was born in Middlesex County, Virginia. He moved from there to Chowan County, North Carolina and fathered seven children. One of his descendants was David Copeland (b.1730) who married Elizabeth Douglas and was the father of at least five children. Descendants moved to Tennessee, Alabama and other parts of the United States.
Jacob Woodall was born in about 1740 in Virginia. He married Agnes HIcks, daughter of Samuel Hicks and Diana, in about 1763. They had six children. He died before 1800 in North Carolina. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Virginia, North Carolina, Mississippi and Texas.
