Vor zwei Jahrzehnten erlebte die Bundesrepublik Deutschland mit dem sogenannten „Historikerstreit“ eine Großkontroverse, die Publizistik, Wissenschaft und Politik über zwei Jahre hinweg intensiv beschäftigte. Die Auseinandersetzung mit den Thesen des Berliner Zeithistorikers Ernst Nolte entwickelte sich zu einem Streit, der vor allem entlang der Frage nach der Singularität des NS-Völkermords geführt wurde. Sowohl über die Zulässigkeit eines Vergleichs zwischen nationalsozialistischer und kommunistischer Diktatur aber auch ganz grundsätzlich über die historisch-kulturellen Fundamente der Bundesrepublik wurde leidenschaftlich debattiert. Nun – im Umfeld der „Berliner Republik“ – ist es an der Zeit Bilanz zu ziehen und zu fragen, ob alte Streitmuster überwunden wurden und inwiefern neue wissenschaftliche Ansätze zur Interpretation deutscher und europäischer Zeitgeschichte sinnvoll sind. Dem interdisziplinären Charakter des Themenkomplexes wird dieser Sammelband gerecht, indem er Autoren vereinigt, die den „Historikerstreit“ und dessen Nachwirkungen aus politikwissenschaftlicher, historischer und soziologischer Sicht analysieren und interpretieren.
Patriotismus in Deutschland
Wie kaum ein zweiter Begriff der politischen Kultur der Bundesrepublik Deutschland steht gegenwärtig der "Patriotismus" im Zentrum des Nachdenkens über die sozio-moralischen Grundlagen unseres Gemeinwesens in Zeiten des Wandels. Volker Kronenberg führt die umfassende politikwissenschaftliche Rekonstruktion dieses Schlüsselbegriffs im Beziehungsgeflecht von Nation, Nationalismus, Verfassung und Europa in gegenwartsbezogener Absicht durch - nicht zuletzt um deutlich zu machen, wie notwendig ein aufgeklärter, weltoffener Patriotismus für ein europäisches Deutschland zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts ist.
Fire and Blood
Europe’s second Thirty Years’ War—an epoch of blood and ashes Fire and Blood looks at the European crisis of the two world wars as a single historical sequence: the age of the European Civil War (1914–1945). Its overture was played out in the trenches of the Great War; its coda on a ruined continent. It opened with conventional declarations of war and finished with “unconditional surrender.” Proclamations of national unity led to eventual devastation, with entire countries torn to pieces. It was a time of both unchained passions and industrial, rationalized massacre. Utilizing multiple sources, Enzo Traverso depicts the dialectic of this era of wars, revolutions and genocides. Rejecting commonplace notions of “totalitarian evil,” he rediscovers the feelings and reinterprets the ideas of an age of intellectual and political commitment when Europe shaped world history with its own collapse.
Schwarz-Grün
Der Band thematisiert Koalitionen, Kooperationen und Bündnisse zwischen Union und Grünen – einstmals die politischen Antipoden des Parteiensystems –, die sich mittlerweile von exotischen Ausnahmefällen zu „normalen“ Bündnissen entwickelt haben. Neither Good Nor Bad
When confronted by a range of violent actions perpetrated by lone individuals, contemporary society exhibits a constant tendency to react in terms of helpless, even perplexed horror. Seeking explanations for the apparently inexplicable, commentators often hurry to declare the perpetrators as “evil”. This question is not restricted to individuals: history has repeatedly demonstrated how groups and even entire nations can embark on a criminal plan united by the conviction that they were fighting for a good and just cause. Which circumstances occasioned such actions? What was their motivation? Applying a number of historical, scientific and social-scientific approaches to this question, this study produces an integrative portrait of the reasons for human behavior and advances a number of different interpretations for their genesis. The book makes clear the extent to which we live in socially-constructed realities in which we cling for dear life to a range of conceptions and beliefs which can all too easily fall apart in situations of crisis.

This two-volume handbook provides readers with a comprehensive interpretation of globality through the multifaceted prism of the humanities and social sciences. Key concepts and symbolizations rooted in and shaped by European academic traditions are discussed and reinterpreted under the conditions of the global turn. Highlighting consistent anthropological features and socio-cultural realities, the handbook gathers coherently structured articles written by 110 professors in the humanities and social sciences at Bonn University, Germany, who initiate a global dialogue on meaningful and sustainable notions of human life in the age of globality. Volume 1 introduces readers to various interpretations of globality, and discusses notions of human development, communication and aesthetics. Volume 2 covers notions of technical meaning, of political and moral order, and reflections on the shaping of globality.
Empires to be remembered
By applying a comparative approach the volume focuses on a select group of „empires“ which are generally not in the focus of empires studies. They are studied in detail and analyzed due to a strict concept that takes into account real history and reception history as well. Reception history becomes more and more an important element in empire studies although this topic is still often more or less underdeveloped. The volume singles out a series of such “forgotten empires”. It aims to provide a methodologically clearly structured as well as a uniform and consistent approach. It develops a general set of questions that help to compare and distinguish these entities. This way the volume intends to examine and to illuminate empires that are generally ignored by modern scholarship.
Basic Income and Development
The second annual FRIBIS conference in October 2022 gave an opportunity to reflect on global developments and challenges through Basic Income research and advocacy.
