In On Living with Television, Amy Holdsworth examines the characteristics of intimacy, familiarity, repetition, and duration that have come to exemplify the medium of television. Drawing on feminist television studies, queer theory, and disability studies as well as autobiographical life-writing practices, Holdsworth shows how television shapes everyday activities, from eating and sleeping to driving and homemaking. Recounting her own life with television, she offers a sense of the joys and pleasures Disney videos brought to her disabled sister, traces how bedtime television becomes part of a daily routine between child and caregiver, explores her own relationship to binge-eating and binge-viewing, and considers the idea of home through the BBC family drama Last Tango in Halifax. By foregrounding the ways in which television structures our relationships, daily routines, and sense of time, Holdsworth demonstrates how television emerges as a potent vehicle for writing about life.
Mapping the Limits of Space surveys English artist Dan Holdsworth's 20-year career. Since 1996 Holdsworth has explored the "extreme" territories that characterise humans' changing relationship to the 'natural' world in the Anthropocene. The volume also reveals Holdsworth's (*1974) most recent body of work. Since 2012 the artist has worked with academic geologists to map the exact contours of Alpine glaciers, using drones, lasers, photography, and high-end software used by the military and academy. We encounter millions of points in space, each millimetre-perfect, that plot the outline of a changing landscape. Ever since my first guitar teacher introduced me to the music of Allan Holdsworth in the late 90s, it has been an ongoing apprenticeship. I became fascinated, not only with his music, but with his approach to music itself, and the way he thinks about chords, scales and improvisation. Allan’s REH video was a blessing for me as I was able to glean enough insight into his playing to understand the way the great man thinks, and more importantly to begin to apply those concepts to my own playing. I struggled with music theory and orthodox approaches, so when Allan’s beautifully simple way of thinking about chords and scales clicked for me, I knew I had found something that finally made sense....

And as one would expect from a book co-written by Holdsworth [1871-1944], it goes beyond the law of his day to analyze its historical development. In addition to a valuable introductory chapter on the history of succession, the authors enrich their discussion in the main text with observations on the ways its principles developed over time in response to particular conditions. Their functionalist view, which owes much to Maitland's example, enabled them to create a sophisticated text that avoids the pitfalls of contemporary formalistic and "scientific" treatises.
