We are pleased to present this second volume of a series that has already received much interest. The application of magnetic resonance methods to the study of actual biological systems as contrasted to cell-free samples, although not entirely novel, as demonstrated by Civan and Shporer in Volume I, has taken on new dimensions with the use of phosphorus-31 and carbon-13 NMR in studying cells, tissues, and organelles. The applications of 31 P NMR to such systems is reviewed in this volume, while carbon-13 will be covered in a later one. The use of nitroxide spin labels has grown to the point where it now may be considered a common biological technique. The synthesis and applications of a new ...
The Proteins, Third Edition, Volume V discusses the unifying concepts of protein chemistry. This volume contains three chapters that cover specific protein classes, namely, glycoproteins and cyclopeptides. Chapter 1 deals first with the purification and characterization of the N- and O-linked glycosidic groups of glycoproteins. This chapter then describes the oligosaccharide catabolism and the roles of lysosomal hydrolases, and of functions of glycoproteins as mediated by their oligosaccharide groups. Chapter 2 begins with a detailed review of ultraviolet and visible spectroscopic techniques along with their basic principles, as well as theoretical calculations of peptide spectra. This chapt...

Current Topics in Cellular Regulation, Volume 15 deliberates the basic mechanisms involved in the regulation of diverse cellular activities. This book discusses the kinetics and thermodynamics of cGMP binding to G-kinase, activation of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase, and polymeric forms of phosphofructokinase. The genetic control of pentose phosphate pathway enzymes in drosophila, discrepancies in the interpretation of the ODC assay, and comparison of chemotaxis in leukocytes and other cells are also elaborated. This publication likewise covers the biochemical aspects of neurosecretion and neurophysin-neurohormone complexes. This volume is valuable to biologists and researchers concerned with advances in the general area of cellular regulation.
