The name Scovil, Scovill, Scoville, and Scovel originated in Normandy as Escoville after the town of Escoville, Normandy. The earliest identifiable ancestor of the Scovils was Ralph de Scoville (ca. 1194), a Knight from Wiltshire. John Scovell (1635-1700) was one of the first Scovils to come to America.
