All over the world, the awareness of the increasing pollution of rivers, estuaries and the sea with its associated impact on these ecosystems, its effect on organisms, food-chains, water supply and finally on man himself is growing. Estuaries form a link between the limnetic and marine environments, characterized by a variety of complex processes. Most of these phenomena are not yet sufficiently understood, making efficient water quality management a difficult task. The volume has two main objectives: to present the latest information on current estuarine research and to elaborate fundamentals and criteria for planners and decision-makers in water quality management.
The conference series Logical Aspects of Computational Linguistics (LACL) aims at providing a forum for the presentation and discussion of current research in all the formal and logical aspects of computational linguistics. The LACL initiative started with a workshop held in Nancy (France) in 1995. Selected papers from this event have appeared as a special issue of the Journal of Logic Language and Information, Volume 7(4), 1998. In 1996, LACL shifted to the format of an international conference. LACL’96 and ’97 were both held in Nancy (France). The proceedings appeared as volumes 1328 and 1582 of the Springer Lecture Notes in Arti cial Intelligence. This volume contains selected papers ...

A novel view of the syntax and semantics of quantifier scope that argues for a "combinatory" theory of natural language syntax. In Taking Scope, Mark Steedman considers the syntax and semantics of quantifier scope in interaction with negation, polarity, coordination, and pronominal binding, among other constructions. The semantics is "surface compositional," in that there is a direct correspondence between syntactic types and operations of composition and types and compositions at the level of logical form. In that sense, the semantics is in the "natural logic" tradition of Aristotle, Leibniz, Frege, Russell, and others who sought to define a psychologically real logic directly reflecting na...
