This diary covers the period 23 November 1836 to 18 May 1837, during which time Banister travelled south accompanied by his daughers, Frances and Sarah. He records his impressions along the way, through the large eastern seaboard cities into the south, then back north in the spring through Harper's Ferry, W. Va., Pittsburgh, and Erie, Pa., and Buffalo, N.Y. to Niagara Falls. Banister discusses the topography and architecture of the south, slavery, as well as his impressions of cities like Philadelphia, Pa., Washington, D.C., Charleston, S.C. (where they wintered), and Savannah, Ga.
