The International Law of Responsibility for Economic Crimes

  • Categories: Law

The problem of indigenous spoliation in developing countries is thoroughly explored in this second edition of The International Law of Responsibility for Economic Crimes. Substantially revised and updated to take account of recent legal and political developments, a case for indigenous spoliation as a violation of international law is persuasively made.

This book reassesses the origins, development and legacy of the philosophy of the British idealists, demonstrating the enduring relevance of their thought for the modern discipline. This body of work coheres around the single unifying theme of the self – a concept of central importance to the idealist school. Particular attention is also paid to the many connections that hold between various philosophers and branches of philosophy, as well as creating a set of continuously running dialogues between contributing authors. Readers will discover a comprehensive, stimulating and sharply focused panorama of British idealist thought, which will be useful to philosophers, historians of ideas, political and social theorists, psychologists, and policy-makers who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the citizen as a self.

A Companion to Michael Oakeshott

Michael Oakeshott has long been recognized as one of the most important political philosophers of the twentieth century, but until now no single volume has been able to examine all the facets of his wide-ranging philosophy with sufficient depth, expertise, and authority. The essays collected here cover all aspects of Oakeshott’s thought, from his theory of knowledge and philosophies of history, religion, art, and education to his reflections on morality, politics, and law. Aside from the editors, the contributors are Corey Abel, David Boucher, Elizabeth Corey, Robert Devigne, Timothy Fuller, Steven Gerencser, Robert Grant, Noel Malcolm, Kenneth McIntyre, Kenneth Minogue, Noël O’Sullivan, Geoffrey Thomas, and Martyn Thompson.

Lectures on the Principles of Political Obligation

Lectures on the Principles of Political Obligation

The present work is Thomas Hill Green’s account of his conception of ‘the common good’ and its importance in determining a set of criteria that will give us the means to evaluate the conduct of political establishments. The principles of political obligation are all founded on this attractive idea of a common good, and Green is able to apply his principles to a wide range of matters from land law to personal freedom. How well the book succeeds in convincing the reader that a common good ought to act as a basis for evaluating the role of political establishments may be unclear. But there can be little doubt that the work is one of the most important contributions to political philosophy made by any English philosopher, and almost certainly the single most important contribution made by any British idealist. The book has attracted philosophers, sociologists, politologists and others since the day of its appearance, and continues to fuel lively debate today.

Man and Morals

Man and Morals

Everyone is aware of the distinction between right and wrong, between what is morally good and morally bad. The distinction is made by people every day, in the home and in the school, in business and labor, in courts and police actions, in politics and in government. And yet, the attitude of many persons toward human conduct is largely amoral. People know intuitively ‘that’ some actions are morally good and others morally bad, but they are not sure ‘why’ they are so. It is therefore necessary to reaffirm the principles which underlie morality. Ethics, or moral philosophy, seeks to lay bare the natural foundations of correct living, to uncover the principles which govern morality and make individual actions to be right or wrong, and thus develop the science of right conduct.
