Challenging the Black Atlantic
The historical novels of Manuel Zapata Olivella and Ana Maria Gonçalves map black journeys from Africa to the Americas in a way that challenges the Black Atlantic paradigm that has become synonymous with cosmopolitan African diaspora studies. Unlike Paul Gilroy, who coined the term and based it on W.E.B. DuBois’s double consciousness, Zapata, in Changó el gran putas (1983), creates an empowering mythology that reframes black resistance in Colombia, Haiti, Mexico, Brazil, and the United States. In Um defeito de cor (2006), Gonçalves imagines the survival strategies of a legendary woman said to be the mother of black abolitionist poet Luís Gama and a conspirator in an African Muslim–led revolt in Brazil’s “Black Rome.” These novels show differing visions of revolution, black community, femininity, sexuality, and captivity. They skillfully reveal how events preceding the UNESCO Decade of Afro-Descent (2015–2024) alter our understanding of Afro-Latin America as it gains increased visibility. Ashé-Caribbean Literary Aesthetic in the Cuban, Colombian, Costa Rican, and Panamanian Novel of Resistance contributes to understanding the important role that African-influenced spiritualcultures play in literature that challenges the concept that European aesthetics are superior to African-inspired cultures. Thomas W. Edison highlights the novels of four courageous Caribbean writers who have used their novels to integrate aspects of African ontology with literary techniques, themes, and history. The common element in these works is the inclusion of African-inspired faith traditions and culture. As a result of this perspective, their literature stands out as keen examples of Ashé-Caribbean resistance literature. While each writer presents their unique literary style in the works, collectively they draw on a foundation of the Afro-Caribbean. The Circum-Caribbean region will be the geographical unit because of its collective history of slavery, colonial rule, and parallel patterns of religious syncretism. El presente de nuestra memoria expresa a través del diálogo filosófico las diferentes maneras de hacer filosofía que han nutrido los 50 años del Departamento de Filosofía de la Universidad del Valle. El lector tendrá la posibilidad de examinar las vivencias personales, las creencias y el entendimiento de las diferentes posturas y se formará una idea de las diversas miradas y lecturas filosóficas que hicieron posible la existencia de un Departamento no anclado unívocamente en una u otra manera de hacer filosofía.

Este número de la Revista CoPaLa,Construcción de Paz Latinoamericana, enfoca su análisis en la discusión de la decolonialidad y anticolonialismo del pensamiento, la interculturalidad y la educación. Conjunta quince artículos y tres reseñas de autores mexicanos, colombianos, bolivianos y brasileños que tienen como objetivo, mostrar que el debate de la interculturalidad se encuentra estrechamente relacionado con otras problemáticas que enfrentan las sociedades latinoamericanas como son los modelos de educación, la lucha por la materialización de los derechos ciudadanos, la exigencia de relaciones democráticas y horizontales entre gobernados y gobernantes, al igual que otras cuestiones vinculadas con las experiencias políticas y sociales en contextos interculturales.
