How can schools and the school curriculum contribute to building democratic citizens? This is a major question posed by governments, educational systems, schools, teachers and researchers around the world. One important way is to identify the competences needed for preparing democratic citizens and incorporate these within both the formal and informal school curriculum. Another question must then be posed- what competences do young citizens need to be considered as active and engaged in modern democracies? In 2011 an invited research symposium of leading civic and political educators, and social scientists from across Europe met in Hannover, Germany to consider this key concern facing Europe...
This volume focuses on cross-curricular and extra-curricular activities within the broader context of citizenship education in secondary schools in Germany. It sets out the background and history of citizenship education in Germany before moving on to selected case studies of specific activities in secondary schools in different federal states in eastern and western Germany. These case studies focus on activities centred on two main topics – intercultural education and the National Socialist period in Germany. These activities are not part of formal schooling, but rather represent examples of young people and teachers engaging in citizenship education beyond the classroom – or, in a positive sense, 'not doing it by the book'.
Around the world, teaching civics is our most practical tool for learning about democracy. In Germany, the art of civics education is constantly being reconsidered and revised, in part because of the country’s history and the widespread awareness in German society of the dangers posed by education failing to do its job. The aim of this book is to provide educators with a varied and theoretically robust repertoire of professional strategies that are grounded in the social sciences.
Technologies such as tablets, plagiarism software, and learning videos are now an important part of teaching and learning around the world. The underlying human-technology relations that shape modern educational settings have a decisive influence on what education is and will be in the future. This volume applies the analytical tools of postphenomenology to the context of education. In three sections, the contributors present empirical evidence on the use of technology in schools, show conceptual convergences with current theories relevant to education and training, and challenge and reframe the technologically situated subject as the goal of education in relation to technology. This collection, edited by Markus Bohlmann and Patrizia Breil, opens up the research field of postphenomenology to the broad field of educational technologies. Postphenomenology and Technologies Within Educational Settings extends the scope of the philosophy of technology and further expands its repertoire of theories and analytical tools.
This volume was produced within the framework of the Erasmus+ project "LabSchoolsEurope - Participatory Research for Democratic Education" and brings together the experiences and expertise of practitioners and theoreticians. It is dedicated to the implementation of Democratic Education into school and university. By illustrating democratic-educational innovations and practices, school projects, good practice examples or teaching sequences this volume should serve as a source of inspiration for all interested educators.
