In Making the New World Their Own, Qiong Zhang offers a systematic study of how Chinese scholars in the late Ming and early Qing came to understand that the earth is shaped as a globe. This notion arose from their encounters with Matteo Ricci, Giulio Aleni and other Jesuits. These encounters formed a fascinating chapter in the early modern global integration of space. It unfolded as a series of mutually constitutive and competing scholarly discourses that reverberated in fields from cosmology, cartography and world geography to classical studies. Zhang demonstrates how scholars such as Xiong Mingyu, Fang Yizhi, Jie Xuan, Gu Yanwu, and Hu Wei appropriated Jesuit ideas to rediscover China’s place in the world and reconstitute their classical tradition. Professor Xihua Cao (1920-2005) was a leading scholar at East China Normal University (ECNU) and a famous algebraist in China. His contribution to the Chinese academic circle is particularly the formation of a world-renowned 'ECNU School' in algebra, covering research areas include algebraic groups, quantum groups, algebraic geometry, Lie algebra, algebraic number theory, representation theory and other hot fields. In January 2020, in order to commemorate Professor Xihua Cao's centenary birthday, East China Normal University held a three-day academic conference. Scholars at home and abroad gave dedications or delivered lectures in the conference. This volume originates from the memorial conference, collecting the dedications of scholars, reminiscences of family members, and 16 academic articles written based on the lectures in the conference, covering a wide range of research hot topics in algebra. The book shows not only scholars' respect and memory for Professor Xihua Cao, but also the research achievements of Chinese scholars at home and abroad.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally. Poor dietary habits appear to be the major modifiable risk factor for morbidity and mortality from CVDs. Therefore, improving dietary habits and adopting food- and nutrient-based dietary guidelines as part of a global public health strategy is of critical importance to preventing and managing end-stage disease, thereby reducing the direct and indirect costs associated with CVDs. Data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017 suggest that over 80% of disability-adjusted life years and deaths resulting from poor diet are a result of cardiovascular health issues. In many instances, the underlying mechanism linking intake of food, nutrients or whole diets to cardiovascular function has not been fully elucidated.
