The photographic work of Yvonne Venegas explores themes of class, gender and personal representation. Venegas catches the spontaneous gestures of ordinary people to investigate what language is hidden in everyday human gestures. Her intention is to make an author approach to the portrait, in two ways: the first, the portraits that Venegas made of people whom she located through advertisements; the second, the images of other photographers working in portrait sessions. By unifying both lines, the result is a contemporary look that draws the viewer away from diverse situations, where people relate to the presence of the camera.

María Elvia de Hank

Maria Elvia de Hank is a view from within by photographer and author Yvonne Venegas, that observes the life, family, and circle of María Elvia de Hank, the wife of the eccentric millionaire and former mayor of Tijuana Jorge Hank Rohn. As the axis of the project, the wife of one of the richest businessmen in Mexico is observed creating, with her perfectionists touch, a social ideal that takes its place as an example in both public and private life. This feminine axis, perfectly administered, is portrayed against the background that supports it, occasionally awakening doubts in the spectator as to its veracity. A mansion, a collection of animals, a soccer team and its fans, a casino, a school...

The photographic project of Yvonne Venegas (Long Beach, 1970) is the result of the rescue of images from the archive of the commercial photographic studio Venegas Fotografía Fina, established by her parents José Luis and Julia Edith Venegas, in Tijuana, Baja California since 1972. The exhibition is a reflection on the methodologies of the wedding photography from his parents' studio, while analyzing the relationship between intimate photography and contemporary artistic research practice. Through the appropriation of images and through an acute analytical exercise on them, Venegas shows the routines that defined the iconography of the middle class of the border city of Tijuana during the seventies and eighties.
