I wish to welcome all of you to the International Symposium on High Perf- mance Computing 2000 (ISHPC 2000) in the megalopolis of Tokyo. After having two great successes with ISHPC’97 (Fukuoka, November 1997) and ISHPC’99 (Kyoto, May 1999), many people have requested that the symposium would be held in the capital of Japan and we have agreed. I am very pleased to serve as Conference Chair at a time when high p- formance computing (HPC) has a signi?cant in?uence on computer science and technology. In particular, HPC has had and will continue to have a signi?cant - pact on the advanced technologies of the “IT” revolution. The many conferences and symposiums that are held on the subject around the world are an indication of the importance of this area and the interest of the research community. One of the goals of this symposium is to provide a forum for the discussion of all aspects of HPC (from system architecture to real applications) in a more informal and personal fashion. Today we are delighted to have this symposium, which includes excellent invited talks, tutorials and workshops, as well as high quality technical papers.
Geosciences and, in particular, numerical weather prediction are demanding the highest levels of available computer power. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, with its experience in using supercomputers in this field, organizes every other year a workshop bringing together manufacturers, computer scientists, researchers and operational users to share their experiences and to learn about the latest developments. This volume provides an excellent overview of the latest achievements and plans for the use of new parallel techniques in the fields of meteorology, climatology and oceanography.
The bibliography offers information on research about writing and written language over the past 50 years. No comprehensive bibliography on this subject has been published since Sattler's (1935) handbook. With a selection of some 27,500 titles it covers the most important literature in all scientific fields relating to writing. Emphasis has been placed on the interdisciplinary organization of the bibliography, creating many points of common interest for literacy experts, educationalists, psychologists, sociologists, linguists, cultural anthropologists, and historians. The bibliography is organized in such a way as to provide the specialist as well as the researcher in neighboring disciplines with access to the relevant literature on writing in a given field. While necessarily selective, it also offers information on more specialized bibliographies. In addition, an overview of norms and standards concerning 'script and writing' will prove very useful for non-professional readers. It is, therefore, also of interest to the generally interested public as a reference work for the humanities.
Parallel architectures are no longer pure research vehicles, as they were some years ago. There are now many commercial systems competing for market segments in scientific computing. The 1990s are likely to become the decade of parallel processing. CONPAR 90 - VAPP IV is the joint successor meeting of two highly successful international conference series in the field of vector and parallel processing. This volume contains the 79 papers presented at the conference. The various topics of the papers include hardware, software and application issues.
