Game theory is a branch of modern applied mathematics that aims to analyse various problems of conflict between parties that have opposed similar or simply different interests.Games are grouped into several classes according to some important features. In Game Theory (2nd Edition), Petrosyan and Zenkevich consider zero-sum two-person games, strategic N-person games in normal form, cooperative games, games in extensive form with complete and incomplete information, differential pursuit games and differential cooperative, and non-cooperative N-person games. The 2nd edition updates heavily from the 1st edition published in 1996.

Since the first Congress in Zürich in 1897, the ICM has been an eagerly awaited event every four years. Many of these occasions are celebrated for historie developments and seminal contributions to mathematics. 2002 marks the year of the 24th ICM, the first of the new millennium. Also historie is the first ICM Satellite Conference devoted to game theory and applications. Strategic behavior in the human and social world has been increasingly recognized in theory and practice. It is well known that non-cooperative behavior could lead to suboptimal or even highly undesirable outcomes. Cooperation suggests the possibility of obtaining socially optimal solutions and the calls for cooperation are prevalent in real-life problems. Osip Mandelstam, who died in 1938 in one of Stalin's labour camps, is one of the greatest poets of this century. Brown's 1978 volume is a very full and important book which tells of Mandelstam's earlier life and gives an introduction to the poetry. Professor Brown tells as much as will probably ever be known about Mandelstam's early life, his studies, his literary relationships; and recreates in piquant detail the intellectual world of prerevolutionary St Petersburg.
