Phillip Hughes

Drawing on almost 100 interviews and featuring scores of images from the Hughes family's personal collection, this is a stirring biography about the life of Phillip Hughes: son, brother, friend, farmer, cricketer, inspiration. Phillip Hughes gave his life to cricket. And cricket gave Phillip Hughes his life. When Hughes scored twin centuries in his second Test - the youngest man in cricket's 135-year history to achieve the feat - the world hailed the arrival of a brilliant new star. Here was a batting prodigy from a tiny country town with a twinkle in his eye and a wizardry with the willow to fill the dreams of a generation. But those dreams were lost in November 2014 when Hughes was felled,...

Over a decade has passed since Philip Hughes first chanced upon a notebook whose shape and rough, recycled paper provided him with new inspiration for his drawing and painting - ‘I was captivated by the rough texture of the paper, by the book’s shape, indeed by the whole idea of working in a notebook, something I had never done before.’ Many striking images of the beautiful landscapes he has encountered on his travels, from the South Downs in Sussex and the Lubéron in the south of France to Bungle Bungle and Cabbage Tree Creek in Australia, are included here. Philip Hughes has regular one-man shows in London and France, and has been the subject of retrospectives in Scotland and Paris. He is Chairman of the Trustees of the National Gallery, London, and was appointed CBE in 1982.

A new selection from Philip Hughes' unpublished notebooks going back over twenty-five years. In an astonishing collection of twenty-seven notebooks created over a quarter of a century, Philip Hughes has sought to capture the spirit of a place: its geological structure, its relationship with the surrounding landscape, and its occasional signs of human intervention. These painterly but topographically precise notebooks record moments when the artist has been moved to draw what he can see, whether from the shelter of a standing stone in Orkney, Scotland, from the air over the Simpson desert in Australia, or from a postal boat sailing through the Norwegian fjords.Pieced together by Hughes himself from over a thousand drawings, this is a logbook of momentary observations. Some are swift sketches of fields orhorizons, others are slower studies of lichen and flowers in Antarctica, or lines of quartz in granite in Cornwall. The depth of feeling and knowledge Hughes has for different terrains and climates underpins the beauty of this essential and inspiring selection of notebooks.
