Forced convict labor provided the Portuguese with solutions to the growing criminal population at home and the lack of infrastructure in Angola and Mozambique. In Convict Labor in the Portuguese Empire, Timothy J. Coates examines the role of large numbers of convicts in Portuguese Africa from 1800 until 1932. This work examines the numbers, rationale, and realities of convict labor (largely) in Angola during this period, but Mozambique is a secondary area, as well as late colonial times in Brazil. This is a unique, first study of an experiment in convict labor in Africa directed by a European power; it will be welcomed by scholars of Africa and New Imperialism, as well as those interested in law and labor.

Going by Contraries

The ascendancy of science pushed aside Emerson's view of nature as an analogue for a kind and benevolent deity and led to a spiritual crisis that Robert Frost attempted to address in his work. Hass (English, Edinboro U. of Pennsylvania) argues that this was the central concern of Frost's work throughout his career. Frost consistently argued that poetry must seek to find a consistent rationality that strives towards wisdom and firmly rejected Poe's conception of poetry as mere ornament or the more revolutionary conceptions of the American Modernists. Hass traces Frost's career as one in which he slowly overcame his fear of materialism and was able to restore his religious faith. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Henry County [Kentucky] Cemeteries

This collection of transcriptions of gravestones from a large number of Henry County, Kentucky, cemeteries originally appeared in three issues of The Filson Club History Quarterly (July and September 1978, and July 1979) and is reprinted here with permission of The Filson Club. Mr. Johnson, then a member of the Oldham County Historical Society, prepared the first two installments; Mrs. Dent, an active Filsonian and local historian, prepared the final part. Taken as a whole, the work identifies Henry County inhabitants buried in 83 different cemeteries, including the large South Pleasureville Public Cemetery, whose records occupy almost all of Mrs. DentĪ“ s portion.
