Evidence-Based Nephrology

This book covers the management of all major renal diseases from an evidence-based and patient-centred approach. With contributions from leading international experts who have a real understanding of evidence-based medicine it provides recommendations on treatment regimens to adopt for individual patients that are most strongly supported by the evidence. The inclusion of the latest observational and epidemiological data, as well as randomized controlled trial evidence ensures that the book properly reflects the current state of evidence available for nephrological practice. It will be a useful aid to all clinicians, including those caring for transplant and pediatric patients, as it covers the major clinical questions encountered by nephrologists. This reference is an invaluable source of evidence-based information distilled into guidance for clinical practice which will be welcomed by practitioners, trainees and associated health professionals.

This book consists of a series of reviews on selected topics within the rapidly and vastly expanding field of membrane biology. Its aim is to highlight the most significant and important advances that have been made in recent years in understanding the structure, dynamics and functions of cell membranes. Areas covered in this monograph include: • Signal Transduction • Membrane Traffic: Protein and Lipids • Bioenergetics: Energy Transfer and Membrane Transport • Cellular Ion Homeostasis • Growth Factors and Adhesion Molecules • Structural Analysis of Membrane Proteins • Membranes and Disease. Biochemistry of Cell Membranes should serve as a benchmark for indicating the most important lines for future research in these areas.

Evolutionary Tinkering in Gene Expression

The Workshop on "Evolutionary Tinkering in Gene Expression" which was held at the end of August 1988. was planned to celebrate 20 successful Advanced Study Institutes (A. S. I.) in Molecular and Cell Biology. The first Institute was held in 1966 on the Island of Spetsai. after a N. A. T. O. suggestion and was entirely financed by N. A. T. O. The success was immediately so great that the Institute grew very rapidly and in the following years. N. A. T. O .• E. M. B. O. (since 1972) and F. E. B. S. (since 1981) co-sponsored it. Since the start of the AS!. the U. S. National Science Foundation has granted travel money for a limited number of American participants each year. In addition. the course was supported by minor industrial subsidies of varying amounts which enabled the organizers to improve some of the local facilities particularly with respect to the lecture hall. In particular. Boehringer Mannheim has contributed since 1966. Furthermore. the Greek Ministry of Science and Culture has provided support at least for a social event during each ASI.

Challenges in Pediatric Kidney Transplantation

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the unique challenges inherent in pediatric kidney transplantation. The text reviews the problems faced during each stage of the kidney transplantation process, including the occurrence of infections during the pre-transplant stage, surgical challenges during the actual transplantation, and medication issues during the post-transplant stage. The book also features high-yield case presentations of typical pediatric transplant scenarios, from the pre-transplant management of a child with CAKUT to the evaluation and treatment of antibody mediated rejection in children. Written by experts in the field, Challenges in Pediatric Kidney Transplantation: A Practical Guide is a valuable resource for clinicians, practitioners, and trainees who manage or are interested in this challenging group of patients.

Transplantation Immunology Research Trends

In recent years, transplantation immunology has evolved as a distinct field founded on the recognition that rejection of a transplanted organ or tissue is mediated by immune mechanisms in the host responding to antigens in the donor tissue. Included within the scope are T cell immunity; Antigen presentation; Alloreactivity; Pancreas and islet cell transplantation; Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation Models of tolerance induction; Xenotransplantation and The swine leukocyte antigen (SLA) complex. This book gathers the latest research in the exciting new field of transplantation immunology.

ABC of Transfer and Retrieval Medicine

ABC of Transfer and Retrieval Medicine provides the key information required to help health care professionals involved in the movement of critically ill patients to do so safely, correctly and with confidence. Beginning with the practical and clinical considerations to be taken into account during patient transfer and an overview of transfer equipment, it then addresses pharmacological aspects of patient transfer, the roles and responsibilities of the transfer team, and the requirements of neonatal, paediatric and specialist transfers. Mapped against the syllabus for the Diploma of Retrieval and Transfer Medicine (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh), it has been developed as a core reso...
