Nationalism and Regionalism in a Colonial Context
This book describes and analyses Minahasan regional nationalism in the period up to 1942. Attention is given to precolonial antecedents, to the transformations brought about by compulsory coffee cultivation, Christian mission activity and Western education, to the role of local representative councils, to the privileged position which Minahasans came to occupy relative to other Indonesians within the colonial state, and to the ambiguous relationship between Minahasa and the Indonesian nationalist movement. Ideas and models drawn from the theoretical literature on nationalism are used throughout the study to illuminate the processes described. The concluding chapter also includes brief comparisons with other Indonesian regions and with the Philippines, together with an epilogue summarizing the developments of the Japanese occupation and the revolutionary period.

In maart 1927 verscheen het eerste politiek-politioneel overzicht (PPO), samengesteld door de Algemeene Recherche Dienst (ARD), ressorterende onder de Procureur-Generaal van het Hooggerechtshof van Nederlandsch-Indië. De overzichten verschaften hoge Nederlandse bestuursambtenaren informatie over ontwikkelingen die niet in de algemeen toegankelijke Europese pers werden beschreven. Het eerste overzicht behandelde de periode januari-februari 1927. In ieder geval tot aan augustus-september 1939 verschenen deze overzichten. Dit eerste deel van de bronnenpublicatie bevat de overzichten van 1927 en 1928. De inleiding introduceert en verklaart de in de overzichten beschreven gebeurtenissen nader door de ontwikkelingen voor 1927 in het inheemse verenigingsleven en in de Nederlands-Indische maatschappij als geheel te beschrijven.
