Three women, three centuries and the same bone-china chocolate pot: Sara, the scion of a dynasty of chocolatiers from Barcelona, who prides herself on maintaining the family tradition; Aurora, the daughter of a nineteenth-century maidservant, for whom chocolate is a forbidden luxury; Mariana, the wife of the most famous seventeenth-century chocolate manufacturer, an official purveyor to the French court and the inventor of a revolutionary chocolate mill. Through her passion for chocolate, Care Santos takes us on a spellbinding journey through its evolution, from the cocoa bean's first arrival in Europe to the many sophisticated products derived from it today, and shows us how we can understand the great shifts in history through the study of small things. Luscious and addictive, this novel will delight the reader's senses from start to finish.

No? Well, you will soon because we're almost famous! Forming the Stars was my genius idea - you see I need to prove to Mãe (that's my mum!) that I'm a football star so she'll want to come back home. The idea was the easy part, though. Now I've got a team of seven very different girls and we need to work together, to be taken seriously as footballers. We are the DREAM TEAM and we're going to show the world that girls CAN play football!

The Hierarchies of Slavery in Santos, Brazil, 1822–1888

The Hierarchies of Slavery in Santos, Brazil, 1822–1888

Despite the inherent brutality of slavery, some slaves could find small but important opportunities to act decisively. The Hierarchies of Slavery in Santos, Brazil, 1822–1888 explores such moments of opportunity and resistance in Santos, a Southeastern township in Imperial Brazil. It argues that slavery in Brazil was hierarchical: slaves' fleeting chances to form families, work jobs that would not kill or maim, avoid debilitating diseases, or find a (legal or illegal) pathway out of slavery were highly influenced by their demographic background and their owners' social position. By tracing the lives of slaves and owners through multiple records, the author is able to show that the cruelties that slaves faced were not equally shared. One important implication is that internal stratification likely helped perpetuate slavery because there was the belief, however illusionary, that escaping captivity was not necessary for social mobility.

New Labour

Getting pissed, getting laid, getting by. The adventures and misadventures of a group of graduates working in a North London call centre: Alice wants to be a singer, Liam wants to travel, Rob wants to make a killing and Sally's been there too long but it's okay, it's not forever, is it? Is it? New Labour is a comedy drama about being young, working in a shit job, living in debt, and all the funny and sad things you do to cope. It's about the modern workforce - the children of New Labour; their hopes, their realities. First performed by students of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London, in 2014, directed by Richard Wilson, it provides rich opportunities for drama schools and youth theatre groups to perform.
