The Sixth International Symposium of Paediatric Nephrology took place between 29 August and 2 September 1983 in Hannover, Federal Republic of Germany. It was organized on behalf of the International Paediatric Nephrology Association (IPNA), and sponsored by the regional societies of paediatric nephrology, i. e. the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ASPN), the European Society ofPaedi atric Nephrology (ESPN), the Japanese Society of Pediatric Nephrology (JSPN) and the Latin American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ALANEPE). The five in ternational meetings preceding the Hannover symposium were held in Guadalajara 1968 (G. Gordillo-Paniagua), Paris 1971 (P. Royer, R. Habib, H. Mathieu...

As nutrition can be one of the most significant factors influencing physiological processes in health and disease, it is very important what we are fed during childhood and eat through adolescence, as this will influence our health in later years. This book covers such topics as the clinical and therapeutic potential of the interaction between immunological dysfunction and malnutrition. The nutritional problems arising in specific diseases such as cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, short bowel syndrome are all discussed. A broad updated review of the new fuels to the gut and the possible role of nucleotides in infant formulae are presented, as well as the attitudes towards hyperlipidemia and osteoporosis. Nutritional support of the critically ill patient and the nutritional aspects of obesity including the possible role leptin plays are also covered. Written by leading experts in nutrition this book provides an update on different issues and brings together the best results now available and looks ahead to the practical and clinical application of nutrition in the future.
This is a book about renal cysts and cystic kidneys. Its contributors have created a resource of current information in a field that once aroused only curiosity, but that now stands at the leading edge of molecular nephrology. Its authorship includes 'oldtimers', who bring the wisdom of experience, and 'newcomers', whose presence attests to the contributions made by the investigative and technological advances of the past decade. Its text is organized to carry the reader from renal cyst to cystic renal disease. Each of its chapters defines or explores a challenge or an advance. Cells that line renal cysts are diverse in structure, type, and perhaps function. The cysts themselves lie within an interstitium that is not normal and may influence cyst development and growth. Experimental analogs of human disease offer increasing opportunities to basic researchers to examine, in sequence and under controlled circumstances, those events that favor nephron dilation, cyst growth and ultimate renal failure.
The opening chapter of the book illustrates how improved understanding of cellular physiology is leading to novel approaches to respiratory disorders. This is followed by an up-to-date review of modern imaging techniques of the pediatric chest and the outlook for further developments in this field. The state of the art in the management of childhood asthma is presented in the next two chapters: one focuses on the therapy of acute asthma, while the other outlines preventive approaches. Other topics covered include the diagnosis and management of sleep apnea, the applications of both rigid and flexible bronchoscopy in the pediatric age group, as well as laryngotracheal abnormalities and the new developments in surgical techniques for anomalies causing upper airway obstruction. Toxic insults to the lungs by environmental toxins, drugs, acid reflux or pulmonary disease secondary to systemic disorders are very thoroughly discussed as is the approach to the child who develops signs of chronic lung disease. The final chapter focuses on lung transplantation in children with terminal disease and presents results from the center with the greatest experience to date.
Organized by the French Speaking Society for Study and Research on Essential Trace Elements (SFERETE), the Fifth International Congress on Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology "Therapeutic Uses of Trace Elements" was held February 4-7. 1996, in Meribel (Savoy, France). This resort is situated in the heart of the Three Valleys domain, at the gate way of the beautiful Vanoise National Park. More than 250 participants covering six conti nents attended the meeting. This volume contains the text of plenary lectures and of several oral and poster communications. Trace element deficiencies are not only encountered in developing countries or during malnutrition. Subclinical features are also observed in developed societies where they consti tute a background for an impressive number of pathological states. Preventive and curative treatments with commercial products are often prescribed without reliable studies about their clinical interest or potential efficiency. By contrast empirical approaches such as the catalytic therapy, nutritional and pharmacological aspects of trace elements were emphasized on a sci entific basis to favor their rational therapeutic use.
