Peacebuilding in a Fractious World
In January 2017 Mikhail Gorbachev, former president of the Soviet Union, said that it looks as if the world is preparing for war. And Pope Francis noted that war is already being fought piecemeal around the world. In this book we argue that since violence begets violence, we must privilege soft power over military might, if we are to have peace on earth. Gandhi used soft power in India overcame British military might, and King used it to bring about integration in the 1960s. Soft power brought about the nuclear nonproliferation treaty, the Kyoto climate agreement, and Iran’s agreement to refrain from making nuclear weapons. Soft power involves both dialogue between world leaders and conflict resolution, and privileges diplomacy over war. As General James Mattis said in 2013, “If you don’t fund the State Department fully, then I need to buy more ammunition.”
Gandhi and the World
The book revisits Gandhi in this era of turbulence. As rigidly held notions and practices fall to pieces, and as mechanisms of violence and politicking fail, Gandhi comes to picture. If Gandhi could change the course of history, there must be elements in his thought and action, which need re-examination for the benefit of human society. This collection of essays seeks to address the question: Is it possible to generate Gandhian optimism and faith in truth and nonviolence in the contemporary world? From a Jewish God
This book reflects upon accounts of relating with God found in the Psalms, as they provide a fascinating look at the ancient views on the God of Abraham. The early Jewish faithful struggled with their understanding of this one true God, so different from a vast array of gods, goddesses and crafted idols they witnessed around them. Formative Jewish dealings with God that conveyed both a wealth of candor and expression of emotion became bound into the resulting theology. Many generations of these traditions grew as the essential strength in the foundation for later development of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Of course, these religions have numerous differences between them, developed over centuries, yet a kinship in faith cannot be denied as the God of Abraham was at the center so long, long ago. We may say they formed from a Jewish God.
