The Way of the Philosopher

The Way of the Philosopher

The Way of the Philosopher touches on a wide range of philosophical ideas and perspectives. It opens by pondering the meaning of philosophy itself, defining it as 'the search of truth' and 'the continual failure to get to the truth.' The author then dives into discussions of logic, reason, the patterns of thought, living in the present moment, and having an open, questioning attitude. There are reflections on the purpose of emotions, the subjectivity of morality, the illusion of past and future, and the importance of authenticity. Several chapters offer practical personal growth teachings, from cultivating self-awareness to overcoming fears and destructive thought patterns. Themes of freedom, autonomy, and self-reliance also feature prominently. Throughout, author Abdul Shakoor aims to share useful life lessons and timeless insights. The Way of the Philosopher emphasizes cooperating with others, facing challenges with courage, removing the veils of illusion, and ultimately living by following one's heart. While wide-ranging, the unifying message seems to be about seeking truth through philosophy and dedicated self-inquiry.

In the Line of Fire

According to Time magazine, Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf holds "the world's most dangerous job." He has twice come within inches of assassination. His forces have caught more than 670 members of al Qaeda in the mountains and cities, yet many others remain at large and active, including Osama bin Laden and Ayman Al Zawahiri. Long locked in a deadly embrace with its nuclear neighbor India, Pakistan has come close to full-scale war on two occasions since it first exploded a nuclear bomb in 1998. As President Musharraf struggles for the security and political future of his nation, the stakes could not be higher for the world at large. It is unprecedented for a sitting head of state to w...

The Athaan in the Bull City: Building Durham's Islamic Community tells the little-known story of the growth of the Islamic community in Durham, North Carolina. Drawing upon his own knowledge of the founding and development of Jamaat Ibad Ar-Rahman, Inc., Nazeeh Z. Abdul-Hakeem, the organization's principal founder, draws together personal recollections and the details of Durham's major Islamic organization to tell about Durham's burgeoning Islamic community. Reaching back across the community's history of more than thirty years, The Athaan in the Bull City recounts how Islam's foundations in Durham rest upon the lives of Black American Muslims. With the passing of years, the community has grown and has changed, as arriving immigrants, Muslims from around the world, have given the community a decidedly international perspective and outlook.

The Sexual Violence and Impunity in South Asia research project (coordinated by Zubaan and supported by the International Development Research Centre) brings together, for the first time in the region, a vast body of knowledge on this important – yet silenced – subject. Six country volumes (one each on Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and two on India) comprising over fifty research papers and two book-length studies detail the histories of sexual violence and look at the systemic, institutional, societal, individual and community structures that work together to perpetuate impunity for perpetrators. Disputed Legacies focuses on Pakistan, examining law, pedagogy, medical practice and the situations that arise when ‘secular’ law comes into conflict with traditional practice and belief. The contributors to this volume trace the often-troubled interaction between the state and its women citizens and examine the structures and social systems that enable impunity for perpetrators of sexual violence to gain strength.
