"Abdullah Ahmad Badawi: Revivalist of an Intellectual Tradition not only attempts to trace the ancestral roots of Malaysia's fifth Prime Minister, it aims to elucidate the more esoteric ideas couched in the latter's now famous poetic composition, "In Search of Everlasting Peace". In addition, this study represents a critical albeit preliminary examination of the phrase 'Islam hadhari' cast in the framework of the worldview of Islam. It is a philosophical, intellectual understanding of the approach contrary to what the current information suggests." "To date there has been no complete adequate understanding of the phrase. Apart from being the only adequate scholarly work dealing with this approach, it will also be one of the first renderings of the approach into English which simultaneously attempts to weave Abdullah's beautifully penned poetic composition with the need for a sagacious comprehension of the modern contemporary world."--BOOK JACKET.

Dr. Mahathir's Selected Letters to World Leaders Volume 2

Dr Mahathir Mohamad governed Malaysia for 22 years (1981–2003), during which he wrote and received many letters from many world leaders. The letters presented in this volume—by Dr Mahathir, Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, Lee Kuan Yew, Fidel Castro and Saddam Hussein, among others—argue the contrasting positions on bilateral and joint relations, globalisation, as well as wars and conflicts. Dr Mahathir writes directly, in his own distinctive voice and style. The correspondents were transparent, solid, informative, and sometimes robust.

This volume originates from the proceedings of an international conference convened by the Department of History and Civilization, International Islamic University Malaysia, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Yemen, in Kuala Lumpur, from 26 to 28 August 2005. Twelve out of thirty-five papers presented at the conference have been reviewed, thoroughly revised and published in this volume. The introduction and the twelve chapters address the question of Hadhrami identity in Southeast Asia from various perspectives and investigate the patterns of Hadhrami interaction with diverse cultures, values and beliefs in the region. Special attention is paid to Hadhrami local and transnational politics, social stratification and integration, religio-social reform and journalism, as well as to economic dynamism and the cosmopolitan character of the Hadhrami societies in Southeast Asia.

Tragic Orphans

In 1938, noting that the bulk of the Indian population formed a “landless proletariat” and despairing of the ability of the factionalized Indian community to unite in pursuit of common objectives, activist K.A. Neelakanda Ayer forecast that the fate of Indians in Malaya would be to become “Tragic orphans – of whom India has forgotten and Malaya looks down upon with contempt”. Ayer’s words continue to resonate; as a minority group in a nation dominated politically by colonially derived narratives of “race” and ethnicity and riven by the imperatives of religion, the general trajectory of the economically and politically impotent Indian community has been one of increasing irrel...
