Rembrandt
One of the most fascinating aspects of Rembrandt's oeuvre are his landscape drawings, around 260 of which have survived. Wandering through the city of Amsterdam, he depicted neighbourhoods, canals, houses along the city wall and bulwarks with picturesque windmills as well as distinctive individual buildings. Again and again he ventured into the surrounding landscape along the Amstel River or on the Kadijk and Diemerdijk, capturing characteristic scenes in quick sketches with pen and brush or black chalk. He was especially drawn to farmsteads with their neighbouring haystacks and groups of trees, depicting them in very different ways under changing conditions of light and weather. While some of his landscape studies are more expressive of an inner vision, in others the artist seeks to render the richness and beauty of natural forms with great attention to detail. In the late drawings, individual features dissolve into an atmosphere suffused with light and air.
Raphael
Along with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, Raphael ranks among the most important masters of art history. This volume presents his most significant and finest drawings and paintings and, in doing so, provides an overview of the various periods of his career: from the early Umbrian period (until 1504) and the years in Florence (1504-1508) to the Roman period (1508-1520). Based on this wealth of material, the volume examines Raphael's design methods as well as his process of preparing panel or canvas paintings and frescoes. Another focus is on the materials, such as silverpoint, pen, ink, charcoal or red chalk, which he used at particular times to accomplish specific tasks. Raphael
The selection of drawings demonstrates how Raphael created a specific mode of visual invention and persuasive communication through drawing. He used drawing both as conceptual art (including brainstorming sheets) and as a practice based on attentive observation (such as drawing from the posed model). Yet Raphael's drawings also reveal how the process of drawing in itself, with its gestural rhythms and spontaneity, can be a form of thought, generating new ideas. The Oxford exhibition will present drawings that span Raphael's entire career, encompassing many of his major projects and exploring his visual language from inventive ideas to full compositions. The extraordinary range of drawings by Raphael in the Ashmolean and the Albertina, enhanced by appropriate loans, will enable this exhibition to cast new light on this familiar artist, transforming our understanding of Raphael's art.
