Erased

In Erased, Omer Bartov uncovers the rapidly disappearing vestiges of the Jews of western Ukraine, who were rounded up and murdered by the Nazis during World War II with help from the local populace. What begins as a deeply personal chronicle of the Holocaust in his mother's hometown of Buchach--in former Eastern Galicia--carries him on a journey across the region and back through history. This poignant travelogue reveals the complete erasure of the Jews and their removal from public memory, a blatant act of forgetting done in the service of a fiercely aggressive Ukrainian nationalism. Bartov, a leading Holocaust scholar, discovers that to make sense of the heartbreaking events of the war, he...

Mission Accomplished

Examines constitutional jurisdiction in the so-called Visegrad Four: Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The creation of constitutional courts was one of the major milestones in the re-creation of the democratic system in these countries. In Europe constitutional courts exert much of the functions of the Supreme Court of the US. However, the immediate western European samples showed marked differences, which is why besides similarities, the theory and practice of constitutional law show differences in these four countries. Prochazka analyses and explains these similarities and differences. Mission Accomplished contributes to the literature on comparative constitutional law by offering insights into the constitutional discourses that go beyond the discussion of notorious cases and events in these four countries. Prochazka argues that the various historical, cultural, socio-psychological, political and institutional contexts have translated into different modes of constitutional adjudication and interpretation."

The Margin of Appreciation in International Human Rights Law

  • Categories: Law

International human rights courts accord their member states a margin of appreciation in relation to the implementation and interpretation of human rights law. This book argues that a degree of deference is justified because although human rights standards are universal, in practice they inevitably look different from place to place.

Up until now, ‘migration literature’ has primarily been defined as ‘texts written by migrant authors’, a definition that has been discussed, criticised, and even rejected by critics and authors alike. Very rarely has ‘migration literature’ been understood as ‘literature on the topic of migration’, which is an approach this book adopts by presenting a comparative analysis of contemporary texts on experiences of migration. By focusing on specific themes and motifs in selected texts, this study suggests that migration literature is a sub-genre that exists in both various bodies of literature as well as various languages. This book analyses English and German texts by authors such as Monica Ali, Dimitré Dinev, Anna Kim, Timothy Mo, Preethi Nair, Caryl Phillips, Hamid Sadr, and Vladimir Vertlib, among others.
