Giardia is a relatively simple eukaryotic microbe, causing acute and chronic diarrhea which has been used as a model to understand complex biological processes occurring in eukaryotic cells. Further, due to its parasitic lifestyle, Giardia is an excellent system for the study of the mechanisms of adaptation and cell differentiation from the perspectives of molecular and cell biology. This book presents a comprehensive review of the current state of knowledge regarding all aspects of Giardia’s biology, including epidemiology, cell and molecular biology, genetics, pathogenesis, diagnostics, and clinical treatment. It was written by internationally renowned authors, the leading researchers in...
In addition, I showed a putative role for the Gl CPs during encystation. Previous work demonstrated that cysteine proteases are involved in encystation-specific vesicle (ESV) biogenesis, specifically cyst wall protein (CWP) processing. I co-localized Gl CP2 and CWPs to ESVs by transfection of Gl CP2-GFP fusion constructs, confocal microscopy and immuno-electron microscopy. Using affinity chromatography and mass spectrophotometry, I also investigated whether Gl CP2 interacts with other proteins during encystation. This work provides insight into the early evolution of a protease trafficking pathway that continues to function in higher eukaryotes and contribute to the goal of validating cysteine proteases as a drug target for Giardiasis .

Giardia and Giardiasis, Volume 106 in Advances in Parasitology series includes in the first part aspects of molecular and cellular biology of Giardia and the role of particular molecules or molecular groups in essential functions and/or trafficking in the parasite. These approaches are with the aim to explore how this parasite adapts to an ever-changing environment both within and outside of the host animal. Subsequently a comprehensive description of virulence factors secreted by Giardia, are reviewed on their cytotoxic mechanisms and roles in the pathophysiology of giardiasis, and also a description on the potential of these secreted molecules as targets for drugs is included. In the conte...

How to find and prepare safe drinking water—anywhere, any time! Clean drinking water may be the last thing we think about day to day—but it’s the first thing we need in an emergency. Now, survival expert and biologist Joe Vogel explains how to find, treat, and store safe drinking water—even in the most extreme conditions. A Field Guide to Clean Drinking Water includes information about: ·The role of water in the body and how to calculate your water requirement ·Plants, geographical features, and more indicators that signal the presence of water ·How to collect dew and precipitation, and extract water from plants ·How to screen “raw water” for bacteria, pesticides, and other contaminants ·Every purifying method from boiling techniques to chemical disinfection ·And storage options that meet every need.Small enough to take anywhere—and broad enough to cover everything—this is a vital manual for backpackers, survivalists, and anyone who may need to know how to create their own drinking water.
