Uncommon Ulcers of the Extremities

The book covers all uncommon ulcers of the extremities which remain a difficult diagnosis for clinicians most of the times. A variety of causes like metabolic, infective, rheumatoid, drug induced or inflammation may lead to ulcerations. Diagnosis of these ulceration is difficult as these diseases are systemic, and treatment is carried out by physicians but ulcers are managed by the surgeons. Any lacunae or gap in assessment or work-up may lead to failure in diagnosis and increased morbidity. This book provides a systematic and step wise approach to the differential diagnosis of every possible uncommon ulcers in the extremities with detailed work-up, flow chart and summary. The book is system...

Moschella and Hurley's Dermatology

"Provides a comprehensive summary of dermatological conditions, established diagnostic techniques, surgical, laser, and other procedures. An excellent resource for practicing dermatologists, resident physicians, and students. Contains a special focus on dermatologic surgery and cosmetic procedures. Includes a summary of noninvasive diagnostic tools in dermatolog. Discusses simple and practical approaches to clinical pattern analysis, and is the first text to include a discussion on the role of a dermatologist in biological, chemical, and nuclear disasters. May be the first dermatology textbook to have a chapter focusing on care for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community."--publisher.

Metalloids in Plants

Understanding metalloids and the potential impact they can have upon crop success or failure Metalloids have a complex relationship with plant life. Exhibiting a combination of metal and non-metal characteristics, this small group of elements – which includes boron (B), silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), arsenic (As), antimony (Sb), and tellurium (Te) – may hinder or enhance the growth and survival of crops. The causes underlying the effects that different metalloids may have upon certain plants range from genetic variance to anatomical factors, the complexities of which can pose a challenge to botanists and agriculturalists of all backgrounds. With Metalloids in Plants, a group of leading pl...

Ultra-Processed Foods and Human and Planetary Health

The NOVA system is a food classification system based on the degree and purpose of industrial food processing. NOVA, which introduced ‘ultra-processed’ as a food category, has been widely employed within the research community, and is increasingly used by national governments, international organisations, and civil society. Ultra-processed foods (UPF) are defined as formulations of food-derived substances (e.g., fats, sugars, starch, protein isolate) that contain little if any whole food and include classes of additives whose function is to make the final product palatable or more appealing (‘cosmetic additives’), like colours, flavours, and emulsifiers. The impact of the production and consumption of ultra-processed foods on human and planetary health has been acknowledged and has started to gather global attention more recently. Because UPFs have become dominant components in diets of populations worldwide, there is an urgent need to scrutinise the human health, sustainability, and food environment impacts across a range of populations and country contexts and to understand the implications of their consumption for health inequalities.

Evolution of Virulence in Eukaryotic Microbes

A unique and timely review of the emergence of eukaryotic virulence in fungi, oomycetes, and protozoa, as they affect both animals and plants Evolution of Virulence in Eukaryotic Microbes addresses new developments in defining the molecular basis of virulence in eukaryotic pathogens. By examining how pathogenic determinants have evolved in concert with their hosts, often overcoming innate and adaptive immune mechanisms, the book takes a fresh look at the selective processes that have shaped their evolution. Introductory chapters ground the reader in principal evolutionary themes such as phylogenetics and genetic exchange, building a basis of knowledge for later chapters covering advances in ...
