Fire in the Stone

The genre of prehistoric fiction contains a surprisingly large and diverse group of fictional works by American, British, and French writers from the late nineteenth century to the present that describe prehistoric humans. Nicholas Ruddick explains why prehistoric fiction could not come into being until after the acceptance of Charles Darwin's theories, and argues that many early prehistoric fiction works are still worth reading even though the science upon which they are based is now outdated. Exploring the history and evolution of the genre, Ruddick shows how prehistoric fiction can offer fascinating insights into the possible origins of human nature, sexuality, racial distinctions, langua...

A Turkish farmer finds a large obsidian mirror on top of a mound. How did it get there? What did it mean for its creator, and what does it mean for us? In this teaching novel by writer Rob Swigart, the story toggles back and forth between a Neolithic village—and the changing fortunes of the family who finds this wondrous tool—and modern archaeologists whose excavated treasure stirs journalists, governments, and goddess worshippers alike. Through an engrossing tale across millennia, Swigart’s novel provides both a basic reconstruction of Neolithic lifeways and a primer on contemporary archaeological politics and practice. For archaeology students, and for anyone curious about artifacts past and present, Stone Mirror will be a fun, informative introduction both to archaeology and to the people they study.

The Cartulary of Montier-en-Der, 666-1129

The monastery of Montier-en-Der, on the border between Champagne and Lorraine, was one of the most important monasteries of the Middle Ages. Its cartulary, put together in the 1120s at the height of the monastery's prestige and wealth, is a crucial source of information for the history of west Francia before the twelfth century and is here published in full for the first time. Constance Brittain Bouchard begins the edition with a concise history of the monastery, codicological information on the cartulary and the other manuscripts that contain copies of charters from Montier-en-Der, and a close discussion of the polytpyque and the forged charters found within the cartulary. The Latin text of each charter is preceded by a summary of its contents, including notes identifying place names and individuals. The edition also includes a chronology for the charters, a bibliography of works on the abbey, and several maps. With information on popes, kings, and counts, on manorial structures and the obligations of peasant tenants, and on monastic reform, the cartulary will be an essential resource for the study of religious history and of the middle ages in France.

A Global History of The Earlier Palaeolithic

This book tells the story of both the ancient humans who made handaxes and the thoughts and ideas of scholars who have spent their lives trying to understand them. Beginning with the earliest known finds, this volume provides a linear and thematic account of the history of the Old Stone Age, or Palaeolithic period, covering major discoveries, interpretations and debates worldwide; a story that takes us from the embers of the Great Fire of London to the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. It offers a comprehensive and unique history of archaeological theory and interpretation, seeking to explain how we know what we know about the deep past, and how ideas about it have changed over time, refle...

A nomenclator of extant and fossil taxa of the Valvatidae (Gastropoda, Ectobranchia)

The present catalog provides a compilation of all supra- and (infra-) specific taxa of extant and fossil Valvatidae (Ectobranchia), a group of freshwater operculate snails (Gastropoda, Heterobranchia). Taxa initially described in this family and bsequently classified in other families (in particular Hydrobiidae and Planorbidae, but among others also larval shells of trichopteran insects) as well as names due to errors or misspellings are likewise included. For each taxon the full original reference and the ype locality (and type horizon in fossils) is provided. Remarks on nomenclatorical problems and possible solutions are added if necessary. As a novelty the extensive reference list is as far as possible directly linked to the internet source (digital view or pdf-download) of the respective papers to facilitate future taxonomic research.
