Hukum alam mengatur, siapa pun yang bisa bertahan hidup pada masa yang tidak terlalu baik biasanya merupakan bibit dengan kualitas di atas rata-rata. Indonesia's Post-Soeharto Democracy Movement

Despite being a major player in the ending of Soeharto's New Order regime in 1998, today the Indonesian pro-democracy movement is a marginal force in Indonesian politics and the process of reformasi is in the hands of other (elite) forces. Accordingly, there are some who now question if the quest to establish what would have been the world's third largest democracy is now a lost cause. This book represents a unique joint effort by concerned scholars and reflective activists to review and analyze the character, problems, and options facing the Indonesian pro-democracy movement. It is the first study to analyze why the pro-democracy movement failed to capitalize on its earlier successes and today is marginalized.

Assembling Alice

Before and after the Battle of Manila, a Japanese spy and an American soldier have one thing in common: they both fall in love with Alice Feria, a pianist who would later become one of the first women journalists in the Philippines. Both would prove to be instrumental to her survival during the Japanese occupation and the liberation of Manila. Assembling Alice is a portrait of a woman as much as it is a portrait of the times she lived in. She came of age during the commonwealth period, survived both the occupation and the war, and did not write of her experiences as much as she spoke of them to those in her inner circle. Her experiences were sublimated into editorials she wrote for a small magazine called The Filipino Home Companion where she wrote of nation-building and what it meant or should mean to be a Filipino after the second world war. Inside these pages are the stories she told, and have been told about her.

This volume examines the important question of whether or not international human rights and Islamic law are compatible. It asks whether Muslim States can comply with international human rights law whilst adhering to Islamic law. The traditional arguments on this subject are examined and responded to from both international human rights and Islamic legal perspectives. The volume engages international human rights law in theoretical dialogue with Islamic law, facilitating an evaluation of the human rights policy of modern Muslim States. International Human Rights and Islamic Law formulates a synthesis between these two extremes, and argues that although there are differences of scope and appl...

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

ÒIÕm happy to have been a part of history, however small my role was.Ó The words of Wardiman Djojonegoro reveal Indonesian history the way only a man who worked alongside Ali Sadikin, B. J. Habibie and Soeharto can. The modest 85-year-old, a former education minister and current foundation chairman at the Habibie Center, recalls the younger days of a Òbig villageÓ Jakarta and says it was the countryÕs third president who taught him the keys to national development. This is what Peter Zack, a reporter for the Jakarta Globe, wrote on 18 April 2009. In the present English translation of his 2014 memoir, Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Reminiscences of Working with Three Great Indones...
