My Life

Ahmad Amin (1886-1954) was one of that remarkable cohort of Egyptian intellectuals all born a few years either side of 1890, a group whose prolific literary output largely defined and expressed the dominant liberal trend in Egyptian intellectual and cultural life in the period of the parliamentary monarchy from the 1920s through the 1940s. The autobiographical statements of two members of this group, Salamah Musa and Taha Husayn, have previously been made available in English translations. Now the reader unfamiliar with Arabic has an English version of Amin's autobiography to complement those of Musa and Husayn and to illuminate the cultural trends of a most important period of modern Egyptian and Arab history. -- from http://www.jstor.org (Dec. 10, 2013).

"These stories, set in Boston, New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Spain and Barbados, all have ties to India. This Is Not Your Country captures the plight of the "new immigrant": savvy, cosmopolitan, connected by cell phone and video chat, but lonelier than ever, and yearning for connection. Such characters as an emergency-room doctor, a genius computer programmer, a lonely livery car driver, and a teenage runaway desperately seek solace in the bodies and lives of others. The book won the G. S. Sharat Chandra Prize for Short Fiction, selected by Stephanie Powell Watts"--

Desiring Arabs

Sexual desire has long played a key role in Western judgments about the value of Arab civilization. In the past, Westerners viewed the Arab world as licentious, and Western intolerance of sex led them to brand Arabs as decadent; but as Western society became more sexually open, the supposedly prudish Arabs soon became viewed as backward. Rather than focusing exclusively on how these views developed in the West, in Desiring Arabs Joseph A. Massad reveals the history of how Arabs represented their own sexual desires. To this aim, he assembles a massive and diverse compendium of Arabic writing from the nineteenth century to the present in order to chart the changes in Arab sexual attitudes and ...

Only People Make Their Own History

A collection of Samir Amin’s ten most influential essays of the 21st century Radical political economist Samir Amin left behind a cherished oeuvre of Marxist writings. Amin’s intellectual range—from economics to culture—was admirable, and his lessons remain essential. Monthly Review Press is honored to publish this volume, culled from the Monthly Review magazine, of ten of Samir Amin’s most significant essays written in the twenty-first century. The collection is introduced by Amin’s friend and comrade, the Marxist philosopher Aijaz Ahmad, who provides a comprehensive survey of Amin’s life and path-breaking work. Ahmad also offers a contextual focus by which to read such stunningly astute pieces as “Revolution or Decadence?” and “Contemporary Imperialism.” Only People Make Their Own History is a loving and enlightening look at what the work of Samir Amin has meant—and will mean— to millions of people the world over.

The role of Islam in the modern state and the interpretation and implementation of Shari'a law are widely debated. The concept of Liberalism, as taken from the ideological writings of Ahmad Amin (1886-1954) and Husayn Amin (1932-), offers a unique view on the development and reception of these issues in 20th century Egyptian thought. Makoto Mizutani here assesses the roles and contributions of these influential thinkers, and shows how together they can be seen as representative of the 'journey of liberalism' in the contemporary Muslim world. Against the backdrop of recent developments in the region, the author places Liberalism against a broader socio-political context, and offers an original perspective – that in understanding the intellectual origins of Liberalism in Egypt, an insight can be gained into the future of contemporary Islamic thought, both within and outside the Arab world. This book will prove essential reading for students and specialists of Middle Eastern history and politics, and especially to readers grappling to understand the elements of current upheavals in the region.
