The Ultimatum
Certain verses in the Qur'an and traditions of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, are abused by extremists to legitimize their acts of terrorism and violence. On April 21, 2018, the French daily Le Parisien published a manifesto demanding that “the verses of the Qur'an calling for murder and punishment of Jews, Christians, and nonbelievers be struck to obsolescence by religious authorities,” so that “no believer can refer to a sacred text to commit a crime.” The manifesto was signed by some prominent figures, including former President Nicolas Sarkozy. The manifesto is an indication of how much the Qur'an is misunderstood and the grave need for the clarification in the meaning of the scripture, especially in matters that relate to violence. In the light of the context of revelation and the universal purposes of Islamic message, this book aims to explain certain verses (Al-Baqarah 2:190-195, At-Tawbah 9:1-24, An-Nisa 4:88-89) and a particular hadith of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, which are intensely debated and abused.

Fethullah Gülen’s Teaching and Practice
This is the first book of its kind about the Turkish Muslim scholar, Fethullah Gulen, since the July 2016 events in Turkey, the trauma experienced by Gulen, and the disruption to initiatives inspired by his teaching, known as Hizmet. Drawing on primary interviews with Gulen and Hizmet participants and a literature review, this Open Access book locates the clear origins of Gulens teaching in the Quran and Sunnah in dynamic engagement with their geographical, temporal and existential reception, translation, and onward communication. It argues that as Hizmet cannot be understood apart from Gulen and his teaching, Gulen and his teaching cannot be understood apart from Hizmet, while exploring the heritage of both. A more geographically focused case study is set out in author Paul Wellers Hizmet in Transitions: European Developments of a Turkish Muslim-Inspired Movement, also published by Palgrave Macmillan (2022). The Art of Coexistence
The global threat of war, terrorism, the increased gap between poor and rich, famine, malnutrition, global warming and pollution, and many other social and cultural problems, pose a real challenge for present citizens of the globe. Intellectuals and politicians take these challenges as their primary concerns. Despite the existence of some pessimists, there are a number of initiatives working for the common good and expending great effort to solve these problems.
