"The dual traumas of colonialism and slavery are still felt by Native Americans and African Americans as victims of ongoing cycles of white violence toward people of color. In The Feeling of Forgetting, John Corrigan trains our attention on an underexamined aspect of this historical trauma: the trauma experienced by white Americans as perpetrators of this violence. By tracing the practices of remembering and forgetting in the Christian tradition, Corrigan shows how experiences of racial violence and efforts, on the part of white Americans, to deliberately forget race are drivers of Christian nationalism and white supremacy. White trauma, Corrigan says, is detectable as an underground river in American culture. Sometimes it is powerfully joined with evangelical Christianity and surfaces at times in acts of brutality, terrorism, and insurrection. The Feeling of Forgetting is an attempt to understand how that process occurs, and how it is braided with the trauma of victims, so that we might be better positioned to address both"--
This volume contains contributions on genetic aspects of a wide range of focal epilepsies. It is based on an international workshop held in Avignon, France in September 1996. Topics covered include: idiopathic age-related focal epilepsies; idiopathic iocal epilepsies in infancy; autosomal dominant focal epilepsies; molecular biology; animals models; and case reports.
Idiopathic generalised epilepsies are characterised by strong genetic factors and multiple clinical phenotypes; animal models of untreated epilepsies are relevant to some of the clinical syndromes found in humans. This volume is the first to confront human clinical, animal (experimental) as well as basic and applied genetic data. Main section headings: Current approaches; Familial neonatal and infantile convulsions; Absence seizures and absence epilepsy; Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and related syndromes; Photosensitivity; Pathophysiology of convulsive seizures; Fundamental and therapeutic aspects.
Oncogene proteins are proteins coded by oncogenes. They include proteins resulting from the fusion of an oncogene and another gene. This new book presents the latest research in the field from around the world.
This text examines epileptic syndromes in infancy, childhood and adolescence.
Why the “nature versus nurture” debate persists despite widespread recognition that human traits arise from the interaction of nature and nurture. If everyone now agrees that human traits arise not from nature or nurture but from the interaction of nature and nurture, why does the “nature versus nurture” debate persist? In Beyond Versus, James Tabery argues that the persistence stems from a century-long struggle to understand the interaction of nature and nurture—a struggle to define what the interaction of nature and nurture is, how it should be investigated, and what counts as evidence for it. Tabery examines past episodes in the nature versus nurture debates, offers a contempora...
Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder of childhood, occurring both in children whose physical and cognitive states are otherwise normal as well as being a facet of a more generalised and severe brain disease. There are many manifestations of epilepsy and, therefore, a diversity of factors in underlying pathology, responses to treatment
This comprehensive handbook synthesizes the often-fractured relationship between the study of biology and the study of society. Bringing together a compelling array of interdisciplinary contributions, the authors demonstrate how nuanced attention to both the biological and social sciences opens up novel perspectives upon some of the most significant sociological, anthropological, philosophical and biological questions of our era. The six sections cover topics ranging from genomics and epigenetics, to neuroscience and psychology to social epidemiology and medicine. The authors collaboratively present state-of-the-art research and perspectives in some of the most intriguing areas of what can b...
