Structured Documents

This volume explores the structured representation of documents in computer document preparation systems. Using this approach to documents allows their logical structure to be represented both descriptively and analytically. Papers from major authorities in the field have been selected to form a unified whole. The book presents various models that can be used for representing documents within electronic publishing software and shows the advantages that can be drawn from a high level representation. Viewpoints of the typographer, linguist, and computer scientist are provided.

Languages for Automation

Two central ideas in the movement toward advanced automation systems are the office-of-the-future (or office automation system), and the factory of-the-future (or factory automation system). An office automation system is an integrated system with diversified office equipment, communication devices, intelligent terminals, intelligent copiers, etc., for providing information management and control in a dis tributed office environment. A factory automation system is also an inte grated system with programmable machine tools, robots, and other pro cess equipment such as new "peripherals," for providing manufacturing information management and control. Such advanced automation systems can be reg...

Computers as Components

Computers as Components, Second Edition, updates the first book to bring essential knowledge on embedded systems technology and techniques under a single cover. This edition has been updated to the state-of-the-art by reworking and expanding performance analysis with more examples and exercises, and coverage of electronic systems now focuses on the latest applications. It gives a more comprehensive view of multiprocessors including VLIW and superscalar architectures as well as more detail about power consumption. There is also more advanced treatment of all the components of the system as well as in-depth coverage of networks, reconfigurable systems, hardware-software co-design, security, an...

Audio System for Technical Readings

This book is based on the author's Ph.D. thesis which was selected during the 1994 ACM Doctoral Dissertation Competition as one of the two co-winning works. T.V. Raman did his Ph.D. work at Cornell University with Professor Davied Gries as thesis advisor. The author presents the computing system ASTER that audio formats electronic documents to produce audio documents. ASTER can speak both literary texts and highly technical documents containing complex mathematics (presented in (LA)TEX).

Plain Text

This book challenges the ways we read, write, store, and retrieve information in the digital age. Computers—from electronic books to smart phones—play an active role in our social lives. Our technological choices thus entail theoretical and political commitments. Dennis Tenen takes up today's strange enmeshing of humans, texts, and machines to argue that our most ingrained intuitions about texts are profoundly alienated from the physical contexts of their intellectual production. Drawing on a range of primary sources from both literary theory and software engineering, he makes a case for a more transparent practice of human–computer interaction. Plain Text is thus a rallying call, a frame of mind as much as a file format. It reminds us, ultimately, that our devices also encode specific modes of governance and control that must remain available to interpretation.
